Shoring up the damage done to the ACA by the Republicans. Protections for Medicare and Social Security. Establish a new coverage formula for the Voting Rights Act. Make Republicans in the Senate vote them down, or make Trump veto them. Hit the Senate and Executive Branch hard with the kind of Democratic legislation that the country will approve of. That's a big way to set up a blue wave in 2020. Put Republican representatives, senators, and Trump on the record and batter them senseless with that record in 2020.
Oh, and also investigate the shit out of Trump. And throw McConnell, Nunez, and the rest of the Fuck America Gang in there, too. I want the most energetic House in history.

(6,679 posts)Divided highly partisan government. Unless something really heinous comes along all the Senate will do the next 2 years is whine and bitch and the Republicans in the House will spend most of their time threatening to hold their breath until they pass out.

(4,446 posts)I completely understand that the legislation won't pass. But PUT THE REPUBLICANS ON RECORD AS OPPOSING IT. And nail them for it in their next election!
The point is to get good legislation ON THE FLOOR. Not have it buried in committee where no one knows that it even exists. MAKE them vote it down. MAKE Trump veto it if it somehow gets past the Senate. And when, in the course of 2 years, it has been made abundantly clear that the Republicans are screwing the nation, take the Senate and the Presidency.

(6,679 posts)Honestly, at the moment, I don't see that getting Republicans on record to screw the nation makes any different.
Racism won pretty much everywhere in America today. I hoped for better from the people of this country. It would not be the first time not likely the last. I see a very dark time ahead for our nation before we lurch forward again. The racist hoard will just whip out the fear mongering in 2 years and get re-elected in a walk. That's my guess, and hope to God I'm wrong....

(4,446 posts)You have every right to your voice, and I'm sorry if I made you feel suppressed in any fashion. I understand how you feel. Tennessee is as bad as Kentucky. Marsha Blackburn would be just as bad as McConnell if she had his power.
The trend of history has always been upward. There are decades that move forward, and decades that move back. But the trend crawls in our favor. I hoped to see a much better nation in my lifetime, and I probably won't, even though I'm just 51. But maybe my teenage niece and nephews, who are wonderful, progressive intelligent people - maybe they'll see a better nation.
I don't think your state or mine will change in the next election, but it looks like there are other states that will. I think we'll get the Midwest back. I think the pendulum that has swung so far towards the darkness in 2016-2018 will start its swing back.
