I don't buy that the Kavanaugh vote saved him given his past and his standing in the state, but there is something about him (maybe it's ancestral Dems in WV) that has kept him around and I wish we had a few more of him while we try to recoup and flip purple seats that we lost in 2016/2014.

We're going to need some Manchins/Testers if we want to gain the Senate in 2020.

He elected to go through the election in 2018 as a Democratic Senator in a state that Trump won by +40 points when he could have easily switched parties early and coasted to reelection as a Republican. He has gained next to nothing for the last 4 years being a Democrat.

If we would have taken over the Senate, he would not have had to do anything and would be in majority. Now he can safely switch and be in majority for at least 6 years. After that Kavanaugh vote, I really don't trust him much.

Everyone knew that 2018 would be a terrible year for the Dems in the Senate 6 years ago. Heck, the silver lining of Hillary losing in 2016 was that 2018 wasn't going to be a complete blowout for Dems that it would have been if we were the party in power. He had to work against the current for reelection when as a Republican, he seat would have been secured until the day he died.

Maybe he will switch someday, but I'd think that the man who actively chose to run as a Democrat in the minority in a +40 Trump state, really for some reason wants to be a Democrat.

he kept his seat while McCaskill, Donelly and Heidcamp lost. I think Munchin would have lost too otherwise in the trumpiest of all places in universe, WV.

and in some states dems may need to pretend they are pro-life to win. One can be ‘pro-life’ privately with no impact on legislarure or decisions cause it is a personal matter and not public policy matter. If they need to cast strategic non deciding votes they should do so. Bottomline we nees to keep winning. It’s incremental, we won’t change any state within a single election cycle. 50 states strategy is the only way to go now.

... if nothing else, it does demonstrate that we would have lost that seat if he hadn't voted for him. There's no way that we could argue that it wouldn't have shifted 2% of the voters.

There is everything wrong with Kavanaugh having gotten the position on the bench and how he got it. And now this is feeling like some are giving him a win. I am really bothered with this.

He didn't need to vote for Kavanaugh in order to keep his seat.

The point of having a Democrat in that seat is so that he will stand with us when we really need him - especially if his presence doesn't change who controls the Senate. But if he's going to consistently vote with Trump, even on one of the most important vote in a generation, what good is he?
