* Not enough attention to governor's race, where Steve Sisolak leads big and is all but certain to win. Democrats have not held that seat since Bob Miller left office in 1998. Nevada Democrats have succeeded in the same governor/senator parlay that failed in Florida

* Danny Tarkanian loses again, this time in NV-3 to Susie Lee. People who follow Nevada politics will know what I am referring to. Tarkanian is son of legendary former Runnin' Rebels coach Jerry Tarkanian but has become a political joke in Nevada, desperately scrambling for any major race to pursue and fail. He loses every two years but won't quit

* Automatic voter registration will pass. That should further help in Clark County, where all the cars and population are:

"Unless a resident declines, he or she would be automatically registered to vote when receiving certain services from the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles."

* Kate Marshall will win as Lieutenant Governor and has potential toward higher races later. She has won multiples times statewide and lost only during the heavy red cycle of 2014

1. Since you have an inside view, one winning, one losing, how can fl change? Your thoughts?

2. Voter outreach is inept in Florida compared to Nevada

When I lived in Henderson, NV in 2008 I would literally answer a knock on my door from a Democratic canvasser and not long after I returned to my bedroom the phone would ring from a Democratic phone bank, asking me about that canvasser and whether or not it was helpful. Did I need anything else, like a ride to the polls?

That's how amazingly sophisticated it had become. I have emphasized many times that it was no accident. Harry Reid did that, because he knew damn well he faced a troubling midterm re-election bid in midterm 2010, with Republicans eager to embarrass him late in his career, like with Bill Nelson (apparently) tonight.

In Florida I am taken for granted. I don't know how else to put it. Despite being registered Democratic here for nearly 10 years I did not receive a single phone call until 2016, and that was from local Democrat in a minor race. I was beyond stunned to receive that phone call, after nearly 8 years. It was a sweet obviously African-American lady who was thrilled that I supported the candidate.

This time only Donna Shalala in my House district FL-27 played like a Nevadan. She contacted me relentlessly, beginning in the primary. I was shocked when she had my cell phone number, which was not listed in my voter registration. Obviously Donna Shalala was on the ball. I received emails from her every day in the past month or so, along with frequent text messages and multiple phone calls. Shalala was simply on a different level. It was laughable when her campaign was criticized.

I never heard from Gillum or Nelson.

Overall I would say the registration drives are a greater problem. Somehow Republicans won the registration net since November 2016 in Florida, despite Trump stuck at mid 30s to low 40s approval. That shouldn't be possible and was an ominous sign toward tonight. I play golf often at a golf course with many young black employees. Guys who fix the golf carts and mow the grass. Stuff like that. I talk politics occasionally with them. None like Trump. I convinced a few of them to register this time. But when I asked all of them if they had otherwise been contacted regarding registering to vote, every one of them said no. I wasn't surprised.

Granted, Nevada is simple given the constrained nature of Clark County, where all the votes are. Dominate Clark County and dictate the state. Florida is at least 20x more complicated.

I hope other states, including Florida, start taking tips from Nevada. Heck, football teams and coaches do that...offseason visits to other teams that have been more successful recently.

5. Since Statewide Races in Florida Seem to be Decided by Close Margins (Three Percent or Less)

Wouldn't Florida Democrats attain a large enough margin to consistent victory by rallying the vote in the counties surrounding the largest cities (Miami, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tallahassee) the way Nevada does in Clark County?

It seems like we could use help from Howard Dean and Harry Reid to set up such a system now, with Rep. Shalala leading the way to personalize the outreach in Florida.

6. I have a friend who was trying to organize

and otherwise be active in Florida Democratic politics.

She started by going to her local Dem party meetings and she found there old, stodgy, and stuck-in-their ways, long-time party functionaries.

They were not interested in new ideas, enthusiasm or new people.

She finally gave up on them as a lost cause.

And predicted pretty much what we've seen there the last few years.

3. Damn, we can't seem to win that secretary of state office

Looks like another agonizing tight defeat.

Three of the statewide races have slipped away, after leads exiting Clark County. That's how vital it is to run up the score in Clark.

This is like a minor example of what happens in Florida after the big counties report and then all the rurals run them over.

7. Democrats have retaken the lead in 2 of the 3 statewide races

Wow, I wasn't expecting that. Only Araujo in the secretary of state race trails, and by less than half a point.

15 of 17 counties are reporting. The revived Democratic leads for treasurer and attorney general are exceptionally tight.

Jon Ralston is strangely not updating or tweeting about these races. I guess he put all his energy into the top of the ticket races. Makes sense now but those of us who remember Ralston from earlier in his career know he would have updated to the finish.
