Tonight was an amazing night for LGBT candidates
Other than Sinema LGBT candidates won all their marquee races. We now have two openly LGBT governors. Our numbers in the House at least stayed even despite two resigning to run for higher office. We also have our first statewide elected official in the South, John Applewood who won an appeals court seat in NC. It wasn't all great. Horridly anti gay candidates did win in NC, IA, and TN. But Kim Davis lost in Kentucky. But overall, this was a pretty good election for the LGBT.
To the demographics who can't say that tonight I want to say remember 2008. While for the most part we fondly remember that election, for LGBT people it wasn't so great. Obama was widely distrusted by our community, CA banned marriage equality (part of a losing streak that lasted until Nov of 2012 and included well over 30 states). We had no LGBT governors or senators nor any on the forseeable horizon. Now, some ten years later we had last night. Florida has enfranchised former felons which will likely make the difference in the next close race. I know the loss of Abrams and Gillum stings. I really thought Gillum would win and the fact he lost to the most racist governor since George Wallace makes it all the worse. But we were in that tunnel not so long ago. We made it out and so will you.
