Both the Washington Post and New York Times gave a lot of oxygen to this phony fear-mongering story as the campaign drew down to election day. Will those august publications keep up with their credulous reporting, or has the spell been magically broken?

By focusing on it again and again, Trump was exploiting the attentional bias, a cognitive bias that recognizes the importance of repetition in getting people to focus on a thing you want them to focus on.

Same thing as the "Lock Her Up!" chants in 2016. Repetition focuses the attention very well, especially if it has something to do with fear, as in the "Caravan" focus.
