As Florida recounts loom, Broward County results reveal questionable voting patterns

As a Broward county voter - I am just pulling my hair out at this point!!!

Broward County had unusual vote discrepancies for the state’s most high profile races, raising new questions as officials on Thursday continued to count votes amid the possibility of multiple recounts, a South Florida Sun Sentinel analysis of voting patterns reveals.

Of the Broward ballots already counted, more than 24,700 people voted for a governor candidate but didn’t vote for a candidate for U.S. Senate, according to county results. The Sun Sentinel found similar discrepancies in other statewide races, where the vote tallies suggest that thousands of voters made the unlikely choice to vote on lower-profile races and bypass the Senate race — a marquee race and the first one on the ballot.

This unusual pattern appears in no other Florida county.

In other Florida counties, the tallies reflect patterns that would be expected, with more voters weighing in on the Senate race than in statewide races of lesser stature.

Not so in Broward, where current vote tallies show that thousands more voters cast ballots for the chief financial officer, agriculture commissioner and attorney general races in the county than they did for the Senate race. (read more)

3. It was fraud in the ballot design, but a recount won't help that

I've read that the 24th district had an unopposed Congressional race which led to a blank spot on the ballot that other districts didn't have. The Senate race was below the blank space. So people who would have voted Dem. just didn't see the Senate race.

It's an outrage, but it's not an outrage that a recount will help.

5. A hand recount will determine the validity of that excuse.

And it sounds like a hand recount is what Nelson will be getting.

6. I call BS

My in-laws and a few friends voted in that district, not one missed the Senate race. My parents voted in the 20th district in which their US house rep ran unopposed also, and there was no issue there as well. Democrats despise Rick Scott and made sure to vote against him. This is fishy but what do you expect from a once Jeb Bush appointed SOE.

23. I call BS too.

I am a Broward Democrat - there are 593,560 of us registered in this county and when we opened that ballot we could not wait to bubble in the circles for Senator Nelson & Mayor Gillum!

There was no way we would have left it blank because we couldn't find it because of poor design. I don't buy that all those Dems who voted Blue all the way up and down the 5 page ballot would have left Senator Nelson blank. Gillum and Nelson were who we came there for!!!

9. Yes

The ballots are paper ballots in Broward County that you fill in the bubbles. However with looming recounts, understand that the automatic recount that comes when totals are within .50 percent is a machine count. A manual recount only occurs if the difference is within .25 percent. Last check Gillum was w/i the .50 percent threshold. We're waiting to see if Nelson gets close enough for the .25 manual recount.

13. Florida screws us again

With their insane ballot designs. Why are there ALWAYS problems in that state?

Dems and indies there and in other states need to work together on getting progressive voting reform Measures and Propositions on the ballot like the ones that just got passed in Michigan.

14. So the scanner didn't read them right

And if re scanned with good machine the votes may reappear!
We fill in the bubbles then slide into scan machine. So if machine not calibrated or tweaked in some way the votes might be on the ballots
Just not scanned by the machine. Maybe S Florida will redeem themselves. We can only hope! Thank goodness for the lawyers 😎

21. It's hard to argue that the governors race was lower profile than the Senate race

But it is interesting if those votes all went one way. It's more interesting if they came from a very small area.
