Asked by anchor Sandra Smith what America as a country can do to stop incidents like this one, the first thing Blackburn said was: What we do is say, how do we make certain that we protect the Second Amendment and protect our citizens.
The Tennessee Republican went on to say that mental-health issues need to be addressed before bringing up the issue of gun access specifically.
No one wants an individual who is a danger to themselves or others to have a firearm, Blackburn added. And what you do want is to make sure they are receiving the helpI mean, this is just absolutely heartbreaking. From there, Blackburn offered her thoughts and prayers to the parents and victims.

(11,686 posts)NO!!!! Having a gun will not save lives. When you have a person walk into a place with a shooting planned the action takes far few seconds to start and/or complete than for those being shot at to comprehend what is happening and then actually react. Usually those who do have guns are unable to react in time to save lives and it seems to me most of the shooters kill themselves. Did the "good guy guns" do any good?

(82,849 posts)Yet, every time legislation is proposed to address the problem with all the firearms loose in the country, folks like Blackburn stop it in its tracks. And anything that does make it into law gets repealed.
I have a suggestion for what you can do with your useless thoughts and your meaningless prayers, Marsha.

(135,777 posts)The rule, which was finalized in December, added people receiving Social Security checks for mental illnesses and people deemed unfit to handle their own financial affairs to the national background check database.
Had the rule fully taken effect, the Obama administration predicted it would have added about 75,000 names to that database.
President Barack Obama recommended the now-nullified regulation in a 2013 memo following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which left 20 first graders and six others dead. The measure sought to block some people with severe mental health problems from buying guns.
