General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWe are witnessing mass attempted suicide by millions of Americans. It's complete madness.
There is no other way to describe what we are watching. The people following, protecting Trump are all ignoring reality. Trump is hurting many of them and they don't care. They are watching a mad man commit crimes right out in the open and they don't care.
Trump has gotten Americans killed and they don't care. There is a good chance Trump will get reporters killed.
They now believe the very things that keep us free like the press, justice department are the enemy.
What we are watching right now, is this what Georg Elser witnessed in Germany In the 1930s? Long before Hitler started WWII Elser recognized something strange was happening to the German people, a strange madness. He understood it would destroy Germany.
He tried to kill Hitler, Hitler left 13 minutes early before the bomb went off.
I talked to a Trump voter yesterday about the Democrats winning the house and he guaranteed me Trump would be reelected in 2020. I was witnessing madness. It's impossible to explain.
Thank goodness we won back the house. We now have some protection from what is heading our way. If the Republicans kept control of congress things may have spun out of control.

(3,032 posts)I think Bush is still worse in total. He has the larger economic and literal body count.
This suicide pact is an extension and hardening of an existing trend.

(7,947 posts)derelict towns, no real work, lots of drugs (meth still is a huge problem), even HIV epidemic from sharing needles... and they voted 70% or so, one after another, for the candidate who would take away their Medicaid, get rid of ACA, close rural health clinics, close down retraining centers... but licks up the vomit of Trump. It really does look like self-destruction. They don't care what happens to them and their children and grandchildren, it seems like. In places which have OUT-migration (no one of any origin moving into the county, anyone frankly with any initiative moving out), they are terrified of "hordes" supposedly swarming over a border 2000 miles away. Trump has their number, definitely.
But why? I wonder if it's about "fuel." Anger is the only thing that fuels them any more? And anger kills.
I feel immense sympathy.... and then I think, but really, why bother. They have other options. If they constantly choose the wrong option for themselves out of hate, I don't know if we have enough love to overcome that. (Or maybe we should focus our love on the children at the border-- and the children in these benighted places, to help them move away.)

(12,344 posts)It's easier to reach for simple solutions and blame scapegoats. The demagogue offers simple solutions and stirs up emotions. The emotional release becomes addicting. Once hooked, it us very difficult to stop an addiction. And unlike opioids, which are limited in supply, demagoguery is free and easily available right on TV or the internet or you can easily share it with your friends without giving up your own stash.

(12,640 posts)They truly believe they're going to get whisked up to Heaven along with their God Emperor, and they'll live in comfort for eternity sneering at the rest of us down in the hell they set up for us. They have no concept of a future past a week or so, just of "now" and sometimes, "whatever comes next".
It's the madness of 4-year-olds and/or 13-year-olds, when if something unexpected or unplanned happens, they're suddenly emotionally overloaded and feel powerless at the same time.
These Americans want to throw their tantrums, blow up their enemies, and walk away from all responsibility. They want their controlled lives, where Mommy and Daddy can fix things if life gets too hard for them.
If they destroy everything, it won't matter; they'll just go to their personal Promise Land when it's time to go home. What happens afterwards is God's concern, not theirs.
