Journalist Jemele Hill said Tuesday that her name was removed from Florida's registered-voter rolls over a tweet in which she said she was moving to Los Angeles but that she would fly back to vote for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum.
Hill, who says she bought a house in Florida in 2006, details her experience in an essay for The Atlantic, writing that when she arrived at a polling site in the state for early voting she found out she'd been kicked off the registered-voter roll.
Hill said that shortly after she left the polling location, an official from the elections office told her that a tweet she had posted a few weeks earlier "had been brought to their attention."
In the tweet, Hill wrote that she just moved to Los Angeles but was flying back to Florida so she could vote for Gillum in the Florida governor's race against former Rep. Ron DeSantis (R).

(24,449 posts)I am in MA now, but vote in ME (where I pay my taxes).
Edit to add: Seems like any Republican SOS is a problem for Democracy. They can do a lot more damage by shutting down the right to vote, especially for people who won't vote for their Party..

(51,444 posts)died in Arkansas in April 2017. I notified BOE in summer of 2017 by writing across a form about changing address. Received a Florida mai-lin ballot in September and about a thousand flyers from candidates (horrible ones from Desantis). Then, way after getting ballot, a registered letter came in late October. BOE wanted a copy of her death certificate in order to remove her from voting rolls.

Florida is so weird.

(46,699 posts)and she's still on the voter rolls. I have already called the elections office twice and my daughter did try to remove herself once. I guess we weren't important enough to get special treatment.
