Wisconsin had a Republican trifecta
Tuesday we got a Dem Gov, but on the state level....I am talking about who makes the laws.....Assembly is 63/36 Republicans ...Senate is 18/15 Republicans....

(14,971 posts)What your R legislature is going to do next is try to pass laws to grab power away from the Governor to limit what he can do. Been through this. In 2020 , WI Dems should leave no race uncontested. Run a challenger in every damn race and youll either get control of the legislature or break the supermajority (like we did)so the Governor can have veto power. In states that are so gerrymandered its a long process and you have to chip away at their power. Ultimately , youll prevail.

(9,874 posts)I am really pissed about that. It appears to me that the only way we can reverse that is another constitutional amendment to repeal it, which we cannot propose until we have a majority in the legislature. I guess, alternately, we should have a drive to make sure everyone has photo ID for the next election.

(14,971 posts)the R legislature put amendments on the ballot to try to hold onto power, one of them was voter ID, which passed here , too. So were gonna have to figure a way out of that mess. The big one they wanted passed was to wrest control of appointing judges away from the Governor and give it to the legislature. Democrats and some Rs blanketed the state with ads telling people to vote no on all amendments, luckily this one failed. Its an uphill battle against a radical, authoritarian party but youll get there. First thing Democrats here are going to do is try to get rid of partisan gerrymandering so we dont have to go through this again.

(9,874 posts)I moved from NJ to NC (Goldsboro) in 2016 and when I moved my House rep was a Dem (Butterfield). Then, in the 2106 election, we were moved into Rouzer's (R) district, so as soon as I moved here we were directly affected by gerrymandering.
I know that just before the midterms NC was ordered to draw new maps and then an appeals court said it was too late for this year. Do you know where we stand on that? Is there any updated deadline for new maps?

(128,769 posts)Here in Pa, we had a similar issue and were able to claw back enough to do the same. We were able to pick off 5 state Senate seats (going from 34 (R) - 16 (D) to 29 (R) - 21 (D)) and 11 state House seats (going from 121 (R) - 82 (D) to 110 (R) - 93 (D)).

(128,769 posts)someone who was re-elected twice and who, despite the gigantic efforts of so many people, could not even be dislodged by recall. There are many of us who live outside of Wisconsin who saw these images -
People standing out in the bitter cold chanting while waiting for the boxes of recall petitions to arrive. And many of us cried along with those WI folks when the recall effort fell short.
I applaud the voters of WI for FINALLY making the 3rd time "the charm".
I also applaud WI for a governor who had this guy as her running mate -
-a young man who will turn 32 next month.
