A very specific part of a New York Times profile of newly elected New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went viral today. In it she talked about the logistical anxiety of not having a salary for three months and trying to figure out exactly how to afford an apartment in Washington, D.C. Conservative outlets mocked her, because conservative outlets are not fond of peoples economic hardships contradicting their bogus narrative that everything is great. Ocasio-Cortez hit back in the honest and intelligent way that brought her to Washington in the first place.

Many people online tweeted at Ocasio-Cortez that she could stay with them, and even some commenters on the above-linked diary said the same. Another person decided to offer his D.C. home to Ocasio-Cortez.

(14,899 posts)is a nice offer/sentiment, but only addresses her problem if House ethics rules offer a bit of laxity in the timing of paying said fair market value (i.e. if she can delay the appropriate compensation until after she begins drawing a Congressional salary).
But to address the larger question, F-CK YOU everyone who mocked her for having mundane real-world financial concerns like 99% of Americans.

(282 posts)why would the ethic rules of fair market rate apply to her?

(14,899 posts)House/Senate ethics rules which allowed personal gift income during that time period, wouldn't it be notorious for how it had been abused/exploited?
I'm sure-as-shootin' the GOP would milk the sh*t out of it every election cycle, and yet we never hear about it happening. Maybe that's just the media failing again, but I'm guessing there's a rules-based reason for it.

(20,755 posts)It's something of a tradition- newly-elected Critters without extensive private means tend to spend the first term or so in accommodations shared with other newbies.
Given how much time they do NOT spend "at home", sharing living quarters isn't that much of an imposition, really.
And their more experienced new Democratic colleagues will doubtless provide them with plenty of tips on using resources wisely.

(1,568 posts)If she bunks with another Congress critter is it a finance violation or a kick back? Just curious. DC would be impossible for me to afford until a salary kicked in too, and we are really damn solid middle class.
