Caravan migrants leave Mexico City en masse, headed for U.S.-Mexico border

Thousands of Central Americans left Mexico City on Saturday bound for the U.S.-Mexico border, marking the latest stage in the journey of the migrant caravan that President Trump has labeled an invasion.

Having already traversed a broad swath of Central America and southern Mexico, the migrants embarked on a long trip to what many said was their destination — the Mexican border city of Tijuana, across from San Diego, some 1,700 miles to the northwest.

“We are going to Tijuana and from there to the United States,” said Alex Renderos, 22, a Guatemalan who was among the multitudes seeking to catch a train on Mexico City’s metro system out of this mega-city. “We want to work and send money to our families. I have four younger sisters and my parents back home.”

The exodus on Saturday appeared to include most of the estimated 5,500 Central Americans, mostly Hondurans, who had arrived in Mexico City in recent days. A smaller group of some 500 or so left the capital on Friday.

they would author laws that stops western union and other companies sending migrant money down to their families in those countries.

they would also put laws is place that makes sure the agriculture industry only hires documented Americans etc.

But they won't which shows the immigration issue is just a bugaboo to scare Aunt Mary while she has her morning tea watching fox and friends.

would be patently ridiculous. No one is going to support something like that.

I'm surprised you would advocate that as a solution

Im not saying that. What I am saying if the right really wanted to stop immigration they would do those things.

because they dont, and show the caravan crap instead is how they scare people.

They do nothing but scare and ignore the reasons why people come here, live, send money back, and how big Agra uses these people.

They would make it a felony to hire undocumented worker and prosecute businesses that hired workers. The raids always focus on the workers with arrests and the companies who are knowingly advertising and hiring the workers for low wages, get off with a small fine.

Throw a bunch of White business owners (Like Devin Nunes' family) into jail and shut their operations down, and demand for undocumented labor will shut down.

9. Many would agree, but there are severe ramifications

That would make anyone without a green card or citizenship unemployable, making them homeless and on the streets, including many who have been here for decades with US born children. Ultimately the same effect as mass deportations.

Is that something you thik the newly elected house should propose ?

11. There would be significant consequences to any punitive policy.

I would not support any policy that would make life more difficult for people who are coming to this country out of desperation. My point was that the policies related to immigration never address why it is occurring and seek only to punish immigrants and not those who exploit them for financial gain.

When the economy was horrible in 2007-8 after the bubbles burst, immigration from Mexico was basically net zero meaning that as many people were going back home as coming in.

The only real meaningful way to address immigration is to create a compassionate, unbiased system, and to address the causes of migration in the home countries of the people coming which the US has had a hand in creating.

You are aware that green card holders also send money to families in Mexico and other countries, right? So do naturalized US Citizens. All attempts to shut off those money transfers harm every immigrant who is trying to help families in their nation of origin.

Such policies are clumsy and ineffective. They do not change the reality of migrants coming to this country.

to request asylum in the US, why would a 22 year old man leave his parents and 4 sisters behind ?

Many young men migrate on their own so they can send money back to their families. If they are successful at establishing legal resident status, they may be able to bring their families here. That is why they come here alone.
