Janet Mills was elected Maines next governor on the strength of better-than-average support in traditional Democratic strongholds but also increased turnout in suburban and coastal communities that often split between Democrats and Republicans.
Low turnout in many towns that regularly vote Republican didnt hurt, either.
Those trends, captured in unofficial returns from Tuesdays voting, also likely helped lift Democrat Jared Golden into a runoff with incumbent U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin in Maines 2nd Congressional District and contributed to Democrats taking back control of the Maine Senate and extending their advantage in the House.
Its pretty clear there was a blue wave. Democrats were absolutely motivated and that evidence showed up in several races, said Mark Ellis, former chairman of the Maine Republican Party who now works for a public relations firm in Augusta. What was motivating them is less clear, but I think President Trump, and to a lesser degree Gov. (Paul) LePage, were factors.
