I'm hopeful that many of the students don't understand the implications of what they were doing. I noticed that some were raising a clenched fist and not a fascist salute - a much better salute!

The photo was first posted in an online album of BHS prom photos at wheelmemories.com, the website of local motorcycle photographer Peter Gust. It was posted to Twitter last night by the account @GoBaraboo, which calls itself a “parody account.” It was posted with the caption, “We even got the black kid to throw it up #BarabooProud.”

Gust’s website says he has a son who is a junior at Baraboo High School. It is not clear whether Gust’s son is in the photo. Gust’s website also indicates that he is a retired teacher. Gust did not immediately respond to a phone message or a message left through the contact form on his site.

Gust has removed the entire prom photo album, replacing it with a statement that reads, in part, “due malevolent behavior on the part of some in society; this page has been modified. It is too bad that there are those in society who can and do take the time to be jerks; knowingly and willingly to be jerks! … To anyone that was hurt I sincerely apologize.” However the album is still available via the Web Archive.

14. Peter Gust? More like Peter DISgust.

I don’t get it. WHY on earth would anybody ask a group of people - of ANY age, for ANY reason - to give a “sieg heil” salute, and for a PHOTO? A photo that’ll live forever? A photo whose subjects can clearly be identified?

Why is that considered a joke, or a funny/rowdy thing to do? What could possibly be “funny” or “rowdy” or “a joke” about that? Any Jewish kids in that photo (I hope not)? Haven’t any of those kids taken a 20th century history class? Have ANY of them studied World War 2? Are they even still teaching history in schools?

This is a sad and disgusting display. They should all be ashamed. And shame should rain down upon them all - except for that one kid who didn’t join in.

A former DUer (PPR'd) went out of his way to deny that the white power sign, started as a joke, morphed into a real symbol used by racists. He (claimed to be a she) has had several reincarnations here, imo.

And as much as I know he has suffered at the hands of those little twerps, one day he will look back on this and feel nothing but pride. He will have the knowledge that he can stand on his own for what is right and not be negatively influenced by others. that takes a lot of courage, especially at that age.

Madison is close and is the most liberal city in Wisconsin. Go there and get a degree and a life. These rodents are doing you a favor. (It would kill them if they knew that.)
