'Large parts' of GOP establishment want to distance themselves from Trump, says pollster

Pollster Rob Griffin said on Monday that there are large swaths of the GOP establishment that privately want nothing to do with the Trump administration.

"Throughout Trump's presidency, one of the issues they've faced is that, contrary to what they've promised, they're not able to bring in the best people," Griffin, research director at the Public Religion Research Institute, told Hill.TV's Joe Concha on "What America's Thinking."

"There are large parts of the Republican establishment that even to this day, even though they won't say publicly, really don't want that much to do with the presidency, and hope to have sort of a time period after his presidency where they can distance themselves from him pretty strongly," he continued.

Members of the Republican establishment publicly spoke out against Trump's presidential bid in the early days of the 2016 presidential primary, with some Republicans forming what was known as the "Never Trump" movement.

They don't want to say anything because they have no backbone.

that is when the shit hits the fan for him. When enough republicans realize they can't support him and get re-elected, then we will get the power to indict and eject his ass.

Sorry, but that excuse isn't going to fly in the coming weeks and months as Trump consumes himself in rage, lashing out at anyone and everyone. If you're a Republican watching this dumpster fire of a presidency and you're not at the very least saying something, then you're a willing and eager participant. There will be no mulligans, no "But I didn't know!", no for the good of the party excuses. This administration is inflicting grievous harm on the country and its relations around the world. It's harming our citizens, and stirring up trouble that won't soon go away. Primal forces of hatred and bigotry have again been unleashed, and the rabid dogs are roaming the countryside shooting the chimeras of their fantastic obsessions. Sadly, those chimeras are standing in front of breathing human beings.

And you're doing nothing. Not even speaking out against it. You're biding your time until it's safe to come out again, while your fellow citizens are suffering. The cowardice is bad enough; the cynical political calculating behind is positively sickening.

instead of going to war with us, à la Newt Gingrich. Until then, I must assume they're just giving lip service to distancing themselves from the His Rabidness.

They are the party of Trump, and they own him and his stupid ideas, including tax cuts, immigration, and no gun regulation.

The name Trump is permanently tattooed to their foreheads.

How about now, you damned cowards. I hope that your party is dead, before or soon after Trump is kicked out of office. Your time is up.
