Swalwell on wildfires: Trump 'owns a lot of the problem' on forest management
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) on Monday said President Trump "owns a lot of the problem" on forest management, noting the federal government oversees more than half of the forests in California.
Swalwell, who is rumored to be interested in a 2020 presidential bid, made the remark in response to Trump's tweets over the weekend, which blamed California state officials for the wildfires ravaging both sides of the state. The fires have killed 31 people so far, with nearly 230 people missing in Northern California.
"Im sorry that so many families are going through this in California," Swalwell said on CNN's "The Situation Room."
"They dont deserve to be insulted by the president."
"The president should just remain quiet," Swalwell added. "But ... a majority of the forests in California are under the presidents management. Hes been on the job for two years. If hes blaming forest management, he owns a lot of the problem."
