House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is moving aggressively to snuff out a challenge from some lawmakers who are demanding new party leadership, while powerful allies outside Congress are helping rally support for her bid for speaker.
Pelosi has yet to clinch the necessary votes and is leaving nothing to chance, according to members and aides familiar with her approach. She is encouraging outside groups to speak up on her behalf while personally talking to the Democrats who will choose the next speaker on Jan. 3.
The organizations represent key parts of the Democratic coalition bedrock sources of fundraising dollars, campaign muscle and votes and have significant sway with incumbents and the newly elected.
Emilys List, which supported virtually every female Democratic House candidate, has made calls to incoming lawmakers to tout Pelosis credentials, according to a person familiar with the effort. The leaders of two major unions the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the American Federation of Teachers sent letters Monday declaring their support.

(130,860 posts)when House Democrats meet for the first time since the election and debate a change to party rules, advanced by Pelosi critics, to require a 218-vote majority to win the partys nomination for speaker.
Fourteen House Democrats loyal to Pelosi criticized that move in a letter Monday, saying that while her critics should be able to make their case, when the votes are counted and we have selected our leaders in the caucus whoever they are we need to unite behind them.'

(86,515 posts)and a really sorry attempt at trying to foment angst and uncertainty about Pelosi who is, in my reckoning, very much like HRC... intelligent, articulate, knows the Constitution and a host of laws, is very effective leader who gets shit done and exactly who we need in that office for the foreseeable future to guide us through the hard work we need to do now. Both women are the most qualified for the positions they held (for HRC seek) which is why all this BS and innuendo because she's a woman.

(63,836 posts)will be best to stay, why have infighting now among the Democrats when we have done so well. We need no reason for those filthy tRumpsters to sow discord within our party,
And not to have a man takeover when there have been so many women appointed. Leave it be.

(54,330 posts)She will do it firmly and discreetly. She won't "snuff out" anybody, even if it means she doesn't get to be speaker. If it comes to that, it would be so counter-productive as to make her speakership impossible in the first place, and she knows that.

(108,973 posts)A man would be "firm" or "decisive" in "securing" his bid. She's a woman so she "aggressively snuffs" out a challenge.

(13,035 posts)I work in a male dominated field. My experience has been when a man is assertive, he's seen as a strong and decisive leader. When a woman is assertive, she's a B. We still have a long way to go re: women's rights and the way women are regarded as equals.
