Camp Fire: Death toll of 42 expected to rise as fire grows to 125,000 acres

he deadly Camp Fire in Butte County has killed at least 42 people and grew another 8,000 acres overnight to burn nearly 600 more structures by Tuesday, officials said.

The blaze, which started Thursday, has now burned 125,000 acres and stands at 30 percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire.

Firefighters worked overnight in steep terrain to maintain established containment lines to prevent the blaze from growing further, Cal Fire said.

But the steep terrain was only part of the challenge facing firefighters, said Lia Parker, a spokeswoman from the Forest Service.

“There’s poison oak everywhere,” she said.

Firefighters were navigating through trees that were “weakened” either by flames, the drought or killed by bugs, Parker said. The trees threatened to fall at any moment, she added.

“Those are things that they have to be constantly aware of, especially when they’re hiking in that steep terrain,” Parker said. “They’re actively fighting the fire as best as they can.”
