Call me sentimental, but I think it's nice that Trump is sticking up for the green-card Slovenian trophy wife who married him for his money, recoils at his touch, never smiles in his presence, refuses to share his bedroom and sits in her room, counting every second until he dies.

In fact, how dare you for even attempting to do so.

That's a tactical position they chose, not just some high-sounding words. The differences between people who choose to go to the gutters always quickly become much less apparent.

It's not a matter of "respecting" her as person, it's a matter of refusing to attack her in sexist terms.
Attacking conservative, or otherwise "unacceptable" women in sexist terms is no more "okay" than attacking conservative, "unacceptable" Blacks and Hispanics in racist terms....Are you getting it now?

Pont:. Neither is legitimate because we do NOT know her personally, and thus can not know WHY she married Trump -- Learn the difference between "fact" and "speculation".

(3,479 posts)It isn't gender-specific.
What's next? Might as well not questions Trump's motives either, since we don't know him personally.

it's much more rare.
It works a lot like the Double Standard -- Men are equally, if not more, promiscuous than women, but it's only women, typically, who are smeared with the ugly labels of "whore" and "slut".

(15,062 posts)- that she bought into her husband's Obama Birther BS and was very happy to spout it out on TV.
I also know that she worked in this country illegally as a model when she had only a tourist visa.
Her husband is a vile, cruel, dishonest con man. And she has chosen to stay in his golden tower with him.
For us to extrapolate about her character because of the man she married is not out of bounds, IMO.
whathehell
(29,034 posts)and if critiques of her were restricted to that which IS known, instead

(51,511 posts)We're shaming her for her abhorrent choice of business partners, which, by all indications, is all her marriage is. We're shaming her for her anti-immigrant hypocrisy. We're shaming her for corruptly obtaining a "genius visa" she did not deserve. We're shaming her phoniness. Were shaming her lying about having a degree. We're shaming her grifting. Oh, and she is a racist. Remember, she went on the View and defended Trump's birtherism. She deserves to be shamed for all of that.
whathehell
(29,034 posts)between a "slut" and a "prostitute"?
Uh, that's news to me, but they are BOTH sexist slurs, and the fact is, you have NO right to call her either -- Again, we don't KNOW her, and just because we don't like him and see NO good reason to marry him EXCEPT for his money, it doesn't mean SHE sees it that way..
SunSeeker
(51,511 posts)But calling someone who prostitutes themselves for money a prostitute is not slut shaming. It is stating a fact. Men and women can be prostitutes. It is not inherently sexist.
kcr
(15,314 posts)You're objectifying the woman in the couple, as well as presuming the rich man's motives in marrying her. It's also the reason prostitution is inherently sexist as well. And what does the fact that both men and women can be prostitutes have to do with whether or not it's inherently sexist?
whathehell
(29,034 posts)"Slut-shaming" is any word or action that denigrates a woman for sexual behavior that would NOT be criticized in a man..Such criticism need not contain thw word "slut".
As to the "prostitute" label, no I'm sorry, when it comes to Melania, you are NOT " stating facts", because you have no access to "facts", you have only speculation... AGain, you do not KNOW het, so you can NOT know what part of "you do not KNOW her

(29,034 posts)"Slut shaming" is judging and denigrating a woman for sexual behavior that would NOT be criticized in a man...The criticism need not contain the word "slut".
As to "stating" facts in regard to calling someone a "prostitute" , your problem is, you HAVE no facts that entitle you to label Melanie as such --you have nothing but speculation...There is a large difference!
SunSeeker
(51,511 posts)I listed what she is being criticized for. And it is based on facts. We are allowed to look at facts and make logical conclusions. We do it every day about everything and everyone. Melania is not entitled to an exemption.
GaYellowDawg
(4,446 posts)A man would be criticized for acting as Melanoma does. Lets say that Ann Coulter gets herself a 20 year old Eastern European boy toy who is clearly repulsed by her, but is with her strictly for the money/status he thinks hell get out of it. And theres a picture of her all over him and hes got a stony dead-behind-the eyes look and body language indicating disgust... If you think he wouldnt catch exactly the load of abuse here on DU as Melanoma is for this picture, then youre in denial.
So your premise - that its judging and denigrating a woman for sexual behavior that would NOT be criticized in a man is pretty much bullshit, which makes your little crusade look pretty stupid. Im sure that if you want to be Melanomas fierce defender, theyd welcome you on that idiot site initialed FR.

(115,584 posts)That is, their job is to have sex in exchange for money. Is it sexist to state, as a matter of fact, that a particular person who makes a living by getting paid for sex is a prostitute? That's just a definition of their job, not an insult.

(14,618 posts)Why isn't the media, including tweety, not pointing out that the "office" of the first lady is NOT a constitutional office?
It is an executive branch courtesy extended to a spouse of the potus. There is no mandate, or even a law, granting it any powers whatsoever.
It's a ceremonial perch in a gilded cage.
Treat it that way.
FakeNoose
(32,577 posts)Hey we can be sort of mean on DU, but maybe we should lay off Melania for awhile.
I read Omarosa's book "Unhinged" and she believes there was a time when Melania really did love him. Omarosa says she saw them together in the early days of their relationship and Melania's feelings towards him were unmistakable then. Of course at that time there was no talk of him running for President. On the other hand, Omarosa doesn't speculate whether he loved her or not, so my guess is that she knows more than she tells in the book.
