First is I suspect Dotard realized Mueller knows a hell of a lot of things that he didn't expect Mueller to ever know or find out. But he also probably realized, or his lawyers did anyway, that they don't know exactly what Mueller knows, or how, or who told him, or what documentary evidence he has. So Dotard knows he needs to lie to save his bacon, but also doesn't know which lies he can tell without making things worse.

Second is I suspect Dotard talked to Junior, Jared, and some others who already testified (even though he shouldn't be doing that) about what they said, and this put him in a bind too. On one hand there are things Dotard wishes they hadn't said which he'd like to contradict, but contradicting them both draws attention to the matter and increases the risk one party or the other gets busted for lying (dumbassed DonJr seems like someone who would err thusly). On the other hand, he can't be sure they are telling HIM the truth about what they said to the grand jury.
