The wreck of the Donald J Trumpie (to the tune of the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald)

With apologies to Gordon Lightfoot, my countryman. Gordon Lightfoot is, in my view, an amazing singer and songwriter. He has been among my favorites since the mid 1960s.

This poor parody is my take on the recent election. I hope that it makes you laugh.

The legend lives on in every city and town
Of the orange pig they called Donald Trumpie
The truth, it is said, never comes from the clown
When the votes of November turn bumpy

With a load of big lies twenty-six thousand or more
The Donald J Trumpie weighed heavy
The truth and the facts caused the Trumpie to roar
When the blue tide washed over the levee
Oh, Trump was the pride of the white racist side
Coming back with his orders from Putin
As the big phonies go, he is bigger than most
With a crew of white racist thieves lootin

Concluding some terms with a few Russian firms
When they left fully loaded for stealing
And later that night when the votes were all in
Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?
The stregnth of the voting from me and from you
And a blue wave broke over the railing
And everyone knew, and the GOP too,
T'was the lies of old Trump that were failing

The dawn came late and the Tweeting had to wait
When the votes of November came slashin'
When afternoon came it was freezin' blue rain
In the face of a hurricane west wind
When suppertime came even FOX came on deck sayin'
Fellas, it's too rough to help ya
At seven pm the House it caved in, FOX said
Fellas, it's been good t'know ya

Trumpie raged, there’s blue water comin' in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went outta sight
Came the wreck of the Donald J Trumpie
Does anyone know where the lies and hate go
When the blue waves come in for long hours?
The searches all say they'd have done even more
If there was no suppression and vote fraud

They might have done more, taken the Senate for sure
Except for the strong gerrymander
And all that remains of the old GOP
Are the racists and more hateful slander
The blue wave rolls, it’s still rolling now
In the rooms of the peoples’ white mansion
Old Trumpie steams with his vile fascist dreams
But the states and the people are marching

And farther below where FOX will never go
a progressive wind is a blowing
And the racist boats go as the mariners all know
And soon to be barely remembered
In halls and in houses everywhere they all cheered
That the blue wave had finally crested
The winners bell chimed till it rang 35 times
For each seat that the Democrats bested

The legend lives on from the voters on down
Of the big clown they call Donald Trumpie
The truth that we know is that Trump has to go
When the report of Bob Mueller comes calling.

I stumbled here:

The stregnth of the voting from me and from you
And a blue wave broke over the railing
And everyone knew, and the GOP too,
T'was the lies of old Trump that were failing

Not over the typo, "stregnth", but over GOP. I was trying to make it a word instead of spelling it out -- messes with the beat when it's a single syllable in my head.

Lightfoot still sings. Maybe he'd get a kick out of this, if you'd send it to him.

It was just different from the rock I was listening to at the time and I wondered who was calling the FM station to request something like that. Then I listened to the words and the goose bumps came.

I grew up with one of the guys who died on The Fitz: Bruce Hudson. North Olmsted High School, North Olmsted, Ohio. Bruce was one of the kindest guys I ever knew. Had huge brown eyes. And a wonderful sense of humor that never quit. An ever-present smile, too.

The song parody is fun, but 26 men lost their lives on that ship. Their bodies were never recovered. The wreck lies in Canadian waters. Once the ship's bell was replaced with all 26 names engraved upon it, it was decided that there would be no further dives on The Fitz.

...sooner or later, some of them many times over. It doesn't take away from the original.

May your friend's name be remembered as a blessing.
