Update: Avenattis wife says via her attorneys she *did not* make domestic violence claim against Michael and says the TMZ report is false.
:large
Josh Rubenstein, LAPDs director of communications, said Avenattis arrest Wednesday afternoon stemmed from an incident on the Westside, but he could not provide details until the attorney was formally booked.

We can confirm that today LAPD Detectives arrested Michael Avenatti on suspicion of domestic violence. This is an ongoing investigation and we will provide more details as they become available.
Was it another woman? I mean, the guy's in custody.

TMZ and the LAPD are two different groups of people.
LAPD has said nothing about what happened, who was involved, or anything else other than to confirm the arrest. If you have different information about something the LAPD has said, then what was the name of the LAPD official who said that it was his wife?

Harvey Levin used TMZ to help get Trump elected.
Avenatti is an enemy of Trump's. I don't know what happened, but TMZ is not a legitimate news source and is not a place to get facts & truth about a Trump enemy.

(45,774 posts)Police are called by the wife or ex-wife. Police come out to investigate and make a report. If they suspect something, they can help the wife get a temporary restraining order. Or if there's violence involved, they can make an arrest.
And if the wife/ex-wife changes her mind, she can't withdraw the charges or she can't tell the Police not to arrest her husband/ex. He will be "processed".
Police are not hired to act as judge. They just investigate and start a process.
And it doesn't take a lot to get a temporary restraining order. In my client's case, all it took were some angry retorts via e-mails and a door that wouldn't open (the morning after he banged on it).

I do think Avenatti hurts his own causes with his behavior, but also fear that too many people are immediately jumping on him without knowing all of the facts. He could just be a jackass but innocent. A lot of liberals are jumping on him on Twitter, and I think that's kind of illiberal. Entirely possible that someone wants to frame him - happens often enough with famous people who've pissed someone off.

(14,154 posts)See, those Rethug assholes know that we do all the heavy lifting for them. They just have to start the rumour, and we set out in motion the attacks, the demands of confession, the "I told you so's", until by the time he exonerates himself, he's already been found guilty by us. Well guilty enough. He has a bit of a smell now. We don't care anymore if its found out he perhaps just had a heated argument, because that could also be now retroactively construed as 'violence', if we are creative enough in our thinking. And we are so creative.
Just like Al Franken.
First, I hope it is just a set up. Because we need him. Then, if exonerated, I hope I am wrong about the judge jury and executioner, without all the facts, we become sometimes. I have no doubt that even after exhortation, there will still be some even in here that will never trust him. Republicans know it works every time.

(37,648 posts)So something happened.
Los Angeles Police Department officer Jeff Lee said the domestic violence report was taken on Tuesday in West Los Angeles and the arrest was made Wednesday.
"We can confirm that today LAPD Detectives arrested Michael Avenatti on suspicion of domestic violence. This is an ongoing investigation and we will provide more details as they become available," the LAPD Twitter account posted Wednesday.
In a statement, Avenatti called the allegations "completely bogus."
"I wish to thank the hard working men and woman of the LAPD for their professionalism they were only doing their jobs in light of the completely bogus allegations against me," he said. "I have never been physically abusive in my life nor was I last night. Any accusations to the contrary are fabricated and meant to do harm to my reputation. I look forward to being fully exonerated."

http://www.inquiriesjournal.com/articles/1674/sexual-relations-between-elite-white-women-and-enslaved-men-in-the-antebellum-south-a-socio-historical-analysis
little more reading
Even if the young white woman in this story did not consider herself a sexual assaulter (which she probably did not), this is clearly sexually predatory behavior. The kind of relationship described here, which Jacobs suggests was not uncommon, cannot be classified as consensual in any meaningful sense of the word, and in fact constitutes a form of sexual abuse, if not rape. We thus see that plantation mistresses and elite women, like their male counterparts, were able to sexually control and abuse their slaves.
Another way in which white women were able to exercise sexual control over slaves was by threatening to accuse them of rape or attempted rape if they did not agree to sex (Hodes, pp. 39, 40, 43, 46, 135).4 In doing this, elite white women used one of the primary instruments of patriarchal repressionthe idea that that they were weak and in need of white male protection, and by extension, in need of control and domination by white mento exercise racial control over slaves. Instead of attempting to dismantle the white patriarchal hegemony that oppressed both slaves and (to a lesser extent) white women, predatory white women who coerced slaves into sex through threat of rape opted to perpetuate both white supremacy and patriarchy, by reinforcing paternalistic notions of female sexuality.
