Today in 1960, Ruby Bridges desegregated Willian Franz Elementary in New Orleans with the help of federal marshals.

Historical perspective: She is not yet eligible for Medicare.

Wow, when you look at it from the historical perspective glasses, it hasn't been that long that fair and equal policies/laws were legislated.

I entered 1st grade in 1960, charter class of a new school. Was in the 3rd before a few Asian students showed up, no other ethnic students until middle school when AA students appeared and I had many new ethnic friends from all parts of the globe ... honestly looking back, it was a smooth transition, for me at least ...
I mean I had seen black kids all my life, just not at school until junior high, and then it was ... we were just pre-teens trying to fit in together
of course the 60's were turbulent, and racial tensions were abound, but it was with the adults and not us kids...

and for a historical perspective, I'm not elegible for Medicare either
but getting there... but on the 50th anniversary of my elementary school,
I did get a T-shirt id'ing me as 1st grade 1st year ... so YAY !

thanks for the post

for a year. Only one teacher at the school was willing to teach a black child. Her story should be remembered and celebrated. Thank you for this reminder, iluvtennis.
