The big picture: Republicans lost big in moderate suburban districts in the 2018 midterms, and even ceded ground in deep-red rural districts that voted for Trump in 2016. The flip in Maine's 2nd blue-collar district "filled with forests, lobsters, and blueberries," could be an indicator that the GOP's shift to the right has alienated moderate Republicans in the northeast, the Boston Globe writes.

(15,536 posts)and some in the media are saying it wasn't a Blue Wave. I call bs.
Also, I hope people in Maine make sure Collins is gone in 2020. Her wishy washy vote on Bart O'Kavanaugh was disgusting.

(12,448 posts)...started saying it when the polls closed on Tuesday and the incoming results were slow. They never seemed to adjust even on Tuesday night when it became clear that we won the House. They still aren't adjusting as results are still coming in, almost all for Dems.
I'm not sure what they expected, unless they simply lost interest early Tuesday night. But yes, we have a Blue Tsunami!

(52,155 posts)Not only do they not have a single seat in NE, the mid Atlantic states (PA, DE, NY, NJ, and MD) have 9,0,6,1 and 1 for a total of 17 out of 56 seats. In those states they have one senator.

In fact, of the 12 Senators in New England, only one is a republican, Susan Collins, and she has a rough road ahead of her in two years when she runs for re-election. I wouldn't be surprised if she decided not to run again.

....of republican representatives of the 14 terms (two of them at the same time). But in 2007 (12 years ago) all representatives were Democrats. So in those 12 years through 2015 Democrats had all seats but for four years.
Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island have had all Democrat representatives going back to 1997.

(25,841 posts)are Democrats. The Republican in one district is trying to challenge the results, but she's not going to succeed.
And with a Democrat moving into our Governor's Mansion, and a whole bunch more Democrats elected to our state house, this is a very blue state right now.

First Speaker
(4,858 posts)...farmers, teachers, clergymen. That sort of background. All but one, as far as I know, until my parents' generation were Republicans--and Whigs, and Federalists. (The one exception was First Selectman of his Mass town around the turn of the 20th century. He was the only Dem in town, but everyone kept electing him because they liked and respected him-- "good old Ben." That's how New England small towns were then.) And they were all exceptionally decent, patriotic people, with many, many Revolutionary and Civil War veterans in the list. That sort of decent, small-c conservative Yankee seems to have vanished from history, and the country is very much poorer for it.

(6,448 posts)In my district, we had Dave Obey for 43 years. Now we've had this horny lumberjack for 10 years. He's got 8 kids and complained that he can't make it on $174,000 a year. This district is 95% white and is infested with teabillies. The GOP gerrymandered it that way because they were scared by Julie Lassa from Stevens Point, so now that city is in Ron Kind's district. I'm not a fan of his either because he's a rare Dem who takes NRA money.
We did get rid of Snotty Wanker though and this is Moe-Ron Johnson's last term.
