The Florida Senate race between Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) and Gov. Rick Scott (R) is heading to a hand recount after the latest round of machine tallies showed the two candidates still neck and neck.
Nelson and Scott were separated by a margin of about 0.15 percentage points, according to results of a machine recount released Thursday - a narrow enough margin to trigger a hand recount under state law.
The hand recount must be completed by Sunday, in time for a Nov. 20 deadline for state officials to certify the final election results.
A manual recount does not mean that every ballot is counted by hand.
Instead, local election officials will sort through so-called overvotes and undervotes - ballots on which voters marked either more or fewer than the maximum number of selections allowed

(1,676 posts)They will assume that the ballots that went through the machines without errors were counted correctly. That's not a true hand count. A true hand matches the machine counts against hand counts. I would never trust the counting machines without a paper verification.

(27,771 posts)You're right!
They will only count overvotes and undervotes.
That's NOT a "true" hand count.

(1,676 posts)Did the machines just ADD votes for the fun of it?!

(35,619 posts)...immediately reject ballots with overvotes so the voter knows there is a problem and can fill out a new ballot.

(1,676 posts)At least according to this article.
"Counties in Minnesota will still use voting machines manufactured during the George W. Bush Administration during the upcoming midterm election.
At least 20 counties expect to use machines that are more than a decade old, according to data collected by 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.
New York University's Brennan Law Center said the outdated machines pose "serious safety risks."

Perhaps, the old machines had that feature? IDK.. In any event, I still wouldn't trust any machine (new or old) unless it was actually verified by a full hand count.
