PHOENIX - Grant Woods, the former chief of staff for the late Senator John McCain, and the former two-term attorney general is now a registered Democrat telling KTAR that President Trump and the divisive rhetoric of the GOP is what sparked his decision to make the switch.

“I feel the party left me, and again I was always willing to fight it out within the party,” Woods told KTAR’s "Think Tank."

Woods, saying he likes the direction the Democratic Party is heading and feels the Republican Party has moved away from the principles it once boasted.

He likes the direction the Democratic Party is headed, he thinks his old party is now insane. We should welcome people like that.

I live around a few of that type. They have had concerns about their party's direction for a long time, but they literally need a hot poker shoved up their asses to make a change.

That's not exactly NYC or Boston, full of young voters. If the retirees will not sustain the gop there, will it anywhere????

It's good news. I don't understand why some people aren't encouraged by this kind of news. Arizona is my state and I'm happy about this. The more that turn away from the Repub party and join the Democrats the better, I say! Woods might wind up competing with Martha McNasty for the McCain/Kyle Senate seat in 2020.

it's living proof that the trump fascists are so bad that some repubs are left with no choice but to get the hell outta there.. and that means more voters for Democracy!

Thank you, Jeff Flake, for retiring.

instead of just talking; and some within the party don’t like the results, lol
they’ve been preaching all this though: tax cuts, repeal obamacare, privatize SS and Medicare, no minimum wage increase, deregulate, etc. And suddently some repubs no longer think it’s a good idea after preaching it for years.

Union busting? Erosion of the separation between church and state? Tax cuts for business and wealthy?

I mean, it’s all well and good he’s embarrassed about the clown in The Oval - he should be. But maybe he should fix his own party. That would be nice

Arizona has more registered Repubs than Democrats. If more Repubs want to change parties, and leave the dark side for the light, I consider that a good thing.

.... see the error of his ways re the separation of church and state, I’m all for the old switcheroo .

If he still longs for his “principles” of his old party, I would prefer he stays where he is. If he’s only switching because the toxicity and embarrassment of his party makes it too difficult to win, then I would prefer he stays away.

The guy is an experienced politician, I would think that he knows how to read party platforms or watch politicians make policy pronouncements. That said, if he likes our direction, he likes the cumulative of that direction.
