Tax law failed to save GOP majority

BY NAOMI JAGODA - 11/16/18 06:00 AM EST

The biggest accomplishment for congressional Republicans — passing a sweeping new tax law at the end of 2017 — didn’t end up saving the GOP majority in the House.

The economy wasn’t the biggest issue of the midterms, according to exit polls, which found that a plurality of voters think the new tax law has not had any impact on their personal finances.

Democrats claimed victory on the issue.

“For 30 years, the powerful wealthy few ... have dictated tax policy on the Republican side. Cut the taxes of the rich, and that’s a great thing for America,” Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) told reporters Wednesday. “That’s over. I think our message, our focus, has put a knife through the heart of that argument.”

Republicans are divided.

Some say the law helped prevent the GOP from losing even more seats because it boosted the economy. They blame losses in the House on separate issues and factors.

“Can you imagine the outcome if we didn’t have a booming economy? It made a huge difference across this country, and I think was key in a number of our Republican races,” said House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-Texas).

No it didn't. It had no effect. What DID have an effect was the insidious vestiges of gerrymandering, voter suppression, and outright racist/antisemitic/homophobic/xenophobic megaphone blasts to the deplorable base.

Obama's economy is damn near wrecked by the irresponsible tax cuts for billionaires. It's the shameful, deliberate, calculated, anti-democratic distortions in elections that artificially propped up the GOP. It took a blue tsunami to make a blue wave on the other side of that despiccable red wall.

Not from where I'm standing. But if you think old rich white men getting richer is a booming economy, just wait a few years.

When Americans begin to prepare their 2018 tax return, many are going to discover they have lost many of the deductions they were use to. All Americans will lose the exemptions they were use to. And because of those two losses many Americans will see there taxes go up.

Make sure you check your withholdings. Again another surprise for taxpayers.

In the end this was a giveaway for the very rich.
