Cleveland Browns want to interview Condoleezza Rice for head-coaching job

Browns general manager John Dorsey said last week that he was open to hiring a woman as Cleveland's next head coach, and there is one prominent name on the team's wish list to interview.

The Browns would like to interview former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for their head-coaching job, a league source tells ESPN.

If the Browns follow through on it, Rice would become the first woman ever to interview for an NFL head-coaching job.

I had to check to see if this was the Onion. No it wasn't.

2. She probably has as much knowledge about coaching a football team as she

had for the location of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq

5. Minority & female could land her the job?

Cleveland Browns are already at the bottom. How can they go any lower?

11. It won't land her the job

The Browns will just be able to say that they interviewed a minority candidate.

9. Sadly, that was my thought

David Shaw, who is Head Football Coach at Stanford, could be an excellent candidate. However, he's indicated that the charming Mrs. Shaw has no desire to live outside the Bay Area, so I suspect Cleveland is a non-starter.

4. I'm sure she'd do just as well at that as she did as National Security Advisor.

When I saw this, I had your reaction. I thought for sure it was The Onion. SI has done some famous April Fool's issues - but this is November.

13. Seriously, I could see team President or maybe even GM

Those are jobs where I could see her skill set being used.

Head football coach? I know she does like to spend a lot of time with the football team at Stanford (she goes running with them), but Head Coach of an NFL team? I agree with another poster in the thread - I think this aims to game the Rooney Rule.

10. Mockery of the Rooney rule there are so many qualified minority coaches

And they interview her she has no football experience except for being a fan and part of a ncaa playoff committee that puts the top four moneymakers in

21. First, thanks.

Second, I'd note that the ESPN article states, "a league source told ESPN."

Perhaps Roger Gooddell has decided Dorsey is interested.

23. You know, I suspect Rice would make a decent coach if she didn't have that pesky clock to deal with

She can process a lot of information and make reasonable decisions, but that takes time; coaches don't have that luxury.
