Chipotle manager fired - made African americans prove they can pay BEFORE ORDERING

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6403387/Chipotle-manager-fired-asking-customers-pay-ordering.html

The video, which was posted to Twitter on Friday morning, features a group of young black men who are told they cannot order until they prove they have money to pay.

In the video, the manager of the restaurant in St Paul, Minnesota tells the customers 'you gotta pay because you never have money when you come in here.'

Masaud Ali, 21, recorded the incident and posted it on social media, captioning the video: 'Can a group of young well established African American get a bite to eat after a long workout session. @ChipotleTweets??'

4. Yeah, if he's a dine-and-dasher, he's a thief.

And Chipotle has changed their minds and offered this manager her job back. Guess they aren't ok with people stealing from them, and are happy that their manager was trying do the right thing. It's not racist to prevent thefts at your business. I'm sure she treated the person before this guy and after this guy just like anyone else. But her comment 'you gotta pay because you never have money when you come in here.' means she had a history with that guy.

... in the first place if he's stolen from the restaurant before?

If he's stolen before, which it looks like he did, then follow procedures when it comes to mitigating said theft or Chipotle didn't have any in the first place.

Somethings not right here, I've been to Chipotle and you have to pay before getting the food.

in the age of smart phones and social media, she would have been under the same outrage from the Internet mob. There was no "good" way of handing it. I think she did the best she could have to stop the thief while still trying to do her job and make the sale.
But, yeah, screw the thief for trying to play the victim here. He deserves a jail cell, not a Go Fund Me.
And screw Chipolte for firing her for doing her job.

But I am trying to figure out how he got away with this a few times. Wouldn't he have to grab the item away from them and run? I thought you didn't get handed your tray or bag or whatever until after you pay. Maybe I'm forgetting here.

She could have passively kept the product away from him until he paid, but I agree that probably wouldn't have stopped his scam outrage.

55. Awhile back, I was in line at a local drugstore when someone attempted to steal cigarettes. The

would be thief jumped over the waist- high counter, pushed past the cashier and grabbed a few packs. The cashier reactively yelled, shoved him back and knocked several of the packs out of his hand. He jumped back over the counter and ran out the nearby door. Not sure if he managed to hang on to any of the packs he grabbed.

It all happened so quickly. The cigarettes are in a locked plexiglass case, but it was unlocked since someone had just bought some cigarettes. The guy must have been watching for his moment

Not saying this is what has happened at that Chipotle before, but a determined person could reach and grab or even vault and grab.

and ring you up. He probably grabbed it and ran.
But, yeah. Anyway she did it to stop him from dining and dashing would have brought her under fire. She had no real way of winning, and she lost a lot, until the truth about the thief came out.
If she had kept the food behind the counter, it would have "why you keeping my food back there? What, you don't trust me?" Cell phone camera, social media, she gets called "Chipotle Cara" and racist by strangers, she gets fired, ect. People on the internet love their torches and pitchforks. It's disgusting.

Every single one, from the big chains I worked at to the small mom-and-pop shops, had room for shrinkage should patrons not pay, and procedures to prevent dining and dashing. There is no fucking excuse for this. Chipotle is big enough and profitable enough to know this.

Response to ProfessorGAC (Reply #43)

Mon Nov 19, 2018, 01:47 PM

44. No. I will elaborate what I mean.

I guess you haven't worked in fast food. You serve everybody. You wait for money before you give out the food. People who can't pay are less than .1% of the patrons on any given day. Most days it never happens. Profits will absorb any wasted food due to non-sale. All restaurants have end of day food waste (cooked but unsold meat, for example). Some can save it for the next day, some can't, that depends on the food. But they all have excess waste built into their budgets. Doesn't matter if the waste is because of someone trying to scam them or some line cook over cooking.

Plus, no fast food place I have ever worked in or visited as a customer ever asked me if I had money to pay. This included my poor-as-dirt punk and goth days in the 90s, when I'd go to Denny's looking like a black leather street rat with no money and making everybody in the restaurant uncomfortable. Granted I'm white so I have privilege no matter what kind of scumbag I look like.

The point is, everybody has a plan for dealing with product waste.

They also have plans to deal with fraud, usually internal fraud that the managers are responsible to watch for.

Chains like Chipotle has quotas for such things. And managers who report too much waste will get in trouble. Maybe that was happening here. Maybe this manager was feeling corporate pressure, waste has to be a big deal with Chipotle since everything is made to order, and maybe that pressure caused her to slip.

She's white and privileged by her whiteness. She's taught by white culture to be suspicious of African Americans at all times. We don't know if she's a conscious racist or unconscious one, but she stepped in it regardless.

But regardless of that, every bit of training I had in food service was to be nice and cordial to all patrons no matter what. This was told to me in every restaurant I worked at. Even when I was washing dishes and taking out the trash. Happy smiles all the time and the customer is always right.

If you catch a patron stealing, then all that can go out the window. Call the cops, but otherwise you let the thief go.

I worked at a mom-and-pop burger joint in a college town, we'd have kids trying to steal food all the time. Sometimes they got the better of us and the owner would get pissed and chase after the thief. We weren't allowed to, that was his thing. He'd shout at us to stay. Then later he'd yell at us about what we did wrong.

But the point is, again, even the small business has some kind of awareness and system for dealing with waste and fraud, and not once that I've ever experienced was asking if someone can pay before taking or making the order.

In today's Social Media reality, companies have to be extra aware of employee conduct because everybody has a camera in their pocket and unlimited storage (FB, Twitter, Reddit -- can store all the content you ever generate). So they have to be careful employees are projecting the correct image the company wants far more than what it was like 30 years ago. When some shops had bad employees and managers and had reputations for being scumbags. It was all locally known, nobody could become a Global Internet Villain in an hour.

49. The Elaboration Did Not Help

It's a word salad trying to slam a low wage worker for KNOWING her clientele. This guy had a reputation for this.

Besides that, Chipotle does not take your money when served. I've eaten there. You order. You eat. You pay.

In a McD or BK, you don't get the food until AFTER you've paid.

And shrink is only partially due to "dine and dash". The food that is thrown away because it wasn't used is clearly a big item that any business would pursue toward it's minimum. There's no reason to be in business if one doesn't care how much product gets thrown away.

You're comparing apples to oranges and doubling down on it, to boot!
