A FB friend posted a pic of the confederate flag with the line, "We will not back down from our heritage." I posted a reply, " (Your heritage is white supremacy?)" I won't go into his reply, but one of his friends rejoined, "besides what is so wrong with white supremacy? Whites have been the major force since the day they started writing history down." I replied that I wouldn't even dignify that stupid shit, and he came back that he wouldn't take the time to insult a racist (me).
I told him he could get bandages for his knuckles at Walgreen's. I'm sure they bleed a lot from dragging the ground so much.

I doubt I made any friends there (ha!), but it was kinda gratifying to smack him down a little bit.

Steve King, who has a Confederate flag on his desk, is from Iowa. Last time I checked Iowa was not a part of the Confederacy.

My Alabama ancestors fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War - but not one of them flew the Confederate flag during the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. Yes, one uncle (the Baptist minister one) was aasshole racist but he never claimed that his "heritage" gave him the right to be one or waved the flag of a treasonous movement to support his racism. My mother was asked to join the Daughters of the Confederacy but refused due to their support of the KKK and white supremacy.

These days the flag of the Confederacy is a signal of support for white supremacy and has nothing to do with "heritage."

My husband has Quaker ancestors who moved to some of those states to increase the abolitionist populations back then. And one branch from Kentucky where some fought for the Union and some for the Confederacy. He's descended from the Union soldiers who moved North after the war. His parents came from Minnesota - they moved WAY North!

8. One time on Facebook I got into a Flame War

It was a fan/member of a page for Classic Rock.
Someone mentioned the Anti-Trump song "Tin Foil Hats" that Todd Rundgren and Donald Fagen wrote.
A bunch of Trump supports mocked Todd, saying he shouldn't be mentioned on A Classic Rock Fan page. I pointed out a list of albums that Rundgren produced and proclaimed that Todd deserves respect for the work that he has done. (those were facts) and if they didn't care for his current work that was fine but they couldn't deny his contribution to the history of Rock N Roll Music.
Well that blew Up the page and I decided to leave that group

I said something to the effect that Lincoln would be turning over in his grave. They started attacking Lincoln as a Marxist. I went to the main guys youtube page and he had all kinds of Nazi videos there. Not just old ones but present day Nazi videos. That is who these people really are.

My whole family is from the South. My mother was born in Montgomery, Alabama, eighty years to the day after the Confederate Congress approved the Confederate Constitution in that same city. Every ancestor of mine who fought in the Civil War fought for the South. My 4-times great-grandfather signed Georgia's Articles of Secession.

Not one of those things has ever inspired me to fly the Confederate flag, or burble about 'heritage', or moon dreamily about some idiotic Lost Cause and an imagined perfect antebellum South.

My mother, my siblings, and I are all die-hard, JFK-style liberals, and have lived our lives as a rebuke to that putrid, racist, backward 'heritage' the apologists bleat about. They dishonor every good thing about the South with their hatred.
