(66,316 posts)Kill your wife with a knife, a garrotte, or by holding her under in the bathtub: go to the pokey forever.
Kill her with a gun: "You're free to go, sir."

Damn, LE in this case really dropped the ball. Wonder if the wife's relatives could bring a civil suit?

(62,444 posts)I reached into my pocket for the Franklin and accidentally grabbed my gun and pulled it out as I was asking the clerk, "How much money do you have in the cash register?"
Huge misunderstanding.

(4,138 posts)but it sure wasn't an accident. What kind of idiot works on a weapon without first making sure, and second, making sure again, that it's not loaded. He absolutely should be charged.

(10,143 posts)I think the guy just up and murdered his wife. Guns don't just go off all by themselves.

(10,143 posts)I always disassemble them before I try to clean.

(36,294 posts)Just guessing though.
Follow just one of the basic safety rules and this could have been prevented.
ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. This is the primary rule of gun safety.
ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.

(11,730 posts)I can't imagine how that would happen anyway if he was actually cleaning the firearm and not just acting stupid with it. To properly clean a semi-auto you have to at least partially strip it down. You taken the slide and barrel off. Take the barrel out of the slide, then clean and lube.
I suppose anything is possible but it just seems unlikely.
Kaleva
(36,294 posts)He could have just started by removing the mag. Assuming it was a semi-auto.
But then as it is said, he is a complete idiot. No business putting your finger anywhere near the trigger regardless. Unless you plan to shoot, your finger goes nowhere near the trigger.

(36,294 posts)Happened a few days ago not far from where I live.
Adherence to basic safety rules would prevent many of these tragedies from happening.
workinclasszero
(28,270 posts)Because a whole lot of people think if you pop out the magazine, the gun must be unloaded.
Runningdawg
(4,516 posts)but for this to have happened we know that one or more of these safety protocols were missed. What makes people get sloppy? Alcohol. I have known 2 people "accidently" shot while someone near them was cleaning a weapon. Both times, the person cleaning the gun was drunk. Unless you need that weapon URGENTLY - cleaning can wait until you are sober, well rested and wide awake.

(36,294 posts)When I'm done cleaning, I go upstairs to the b/r, unlock the safe, load the revolver and then lock the revolver in the safe. I'm the only one that knows the combo and only me and my son-in-law knows where the bypass key is hidden in the basement.

(33,310 posts)Remember, many gun owners are deeply stupid & irresponsible. It's the "unorganized" militia for a reason.

(4,826 posts)They forgot to continue talking about gun safety.
I think "always check to see if the gun is loaded" was the first thing listed in the instructions on my first Daisy BB gun in 1957.
SidDithers
(44,228 posts)You're either safe, or negligent.
If you don't want to accept that responsibility, then don't own a gun.
Hope he goes to jail.

MineralMan
(146,286 posts)Which one it is, I don't know. First step in cleaning or servicing a firearm is to clear the piece of all ammo. Magazine removed. Check the chamber. I mean, how hard is that? Last step is to reinsert the magazine. Personally, I would never chamber a round until I needed to use the weapon. I don't believe in having chambered rounds in pistols, especially, unless I'm at the range or need to use the thing.
Eric Rosenbrock is either an idiot, inexperienced, or a murderer.
Kaleva
(36,294 posts)If I was out in public, I wouldn't draw my gun unless I intended to shoot.
MineralMan
(146,286 posts)Empty chamber until I know I'm going to shoot at something.
LanternWaste
(37,748 posts)Which does not deny idiocy or inexperience...
Words do not often lend themselves to "I don't believe..."
MineralMan
(146,286 posts)Negligence can come from inexperience or lack of knowledge, as well as from carelessness, intoxication, or a number of other things. None of those are accidental. Idiots and untrained people should not own firearms. Period. Careless people and drunks should not own them, either.
There are no firearms "accidents." A properly designed and maintained fire arm does not discharge unless someone pulls the trigger and the firearm has a round in the chamber and the action is a state where pulling the trigger discharges the weapon. Firearms do NOT "go off" by "accident." They go off when someone loads them, points them at something and pulls the trigger. Anyone who shoots a person who is not attacking them needs some prison time and needs to never again be allowed to possess a firearm. Period.
Maliciousness comes from being malicious, and is no accident at all.
Try arguing about firearms accidents again, after you refute what I just wrote. If you're trying to "get my goat," you succeeded. Bravo! If you think I know nothing about firearms, then you're very much mistaken.

(22,566 posts)I would walk the mile to school with a fellow classmate and we had brothers the same age at the same grade school. One day he was cleaning his rifle and it went off and killed his brother.
He came back to school 3 days later and I never knew what to say to him about it.
We're both old men now but I wonder if he continued to use his guns all of the ensuing decades and if he still thinks of his brother a lot.
