Marcia Fudge vouched for man now accused of killing ex-wifeThe potential rival to Nancy Pelosi for speaker faces a new political problem.

Democratic Rep. Marcia Fudge sent a letter several years ago supporting a former state lawmaker and judge in Ohio who is now accused of killing his ex-wife, an incident that could play out in the contest over the next speaker of the House.
Fudge asked for leniency in sentencing for Lance Mason in a 2015 letter after Mason admitted to brutally beating his then-wife, Aisha Fraser. On Saturday, Mason was arrested in connection with her death.
The case could become a political problem for Fudge, who is considering challenging Nancy Pelosi for speaker in the next Congress. Fudge is back home in Ohio this week and was going to consult with her family whether to jump into the leadership race. But Fudge is now tied to a criminal case that is dominating headlines back in Cleveland.
Mason previously served nine months in prison for beating up Fraser, a sixth-grade teacher, in front of their daughters. He's now been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with Frasers death, according to the Shaker Heights Police Department. Mason injured a police officer trying to drive away from the scene of the incident, according to news reports.

(52,155 posts)and frankly an abuse of power by her. She was the former prosecutor for Cuyahoga County where this took place so she wrote to the prosecutors as their former boss. This assault required reconstructive surgery. He had no business getting a light sentence and Aisha paid for it.

That was her former boss Stephanie Tubbs Jones. The Politico article got it wrong.

(3,335 posts)Everytime she is seen in public, says nothing or she has no comment. But I've heard plenty from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about primarying Dems who vote for Pelosi as Speaker. Fudge is just a tool to distract us as Ocasio-Cortez appears to be the true power seeker. If the Dems bungle this, they are done as far as I'm concerned. This ME generation wants what they want and they want it now. Not to mention the fact that the young people 19-29 were the biggest NO-SHOWS in the past election, yet they want to tell the rest of us who have been vested in the Democratic Party for decades who to vote for and who should lead the Party. I have no doubt that Nancy Pelosi will stand strong, and yes there is a place for the young people in our party. They just need to learn that you 'eat an elephant one bite at a time'. Nancy knows this and yes the young people can learn a lot from her, if they're patient. My concern is that after all the progress we just made in the last couple of weeks, is going to be squandered by infighting. If we allow this to happen, the Democratic Party is DONE.

(19,949 posts)Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is in Nancy Pelosis corner.
The 29-year-old progressive star, who will become the youngest member of Congress, criticized a letter signed by 16 Democrats calling for new leadership and announcing they will not vote for Pelosi as House speaker.
When I was reading this letter that was kind of released today, my main concern was that there is no vision, there is no common value, there is no goal that is really articulated in this letter aside from We need to change, Ocasio-Cortez said on MSNBC on Monday evening.
She noted the lack of racial and ideological diversity among the signers and the absence of a broad-based coalition and warned Democrats that they could become more conservative.

The former organizer for Sen. Bernie Sanders 2016 presidential campaign said the wave of Democrats elected in the Nov. 6 midterm elections have a mandate to alter government but shouldnt take a leadership change lightly.
If we are not on the same page about changing the systems and the values and how were going to adapt for the future, then what is the point of just changing our party leadership just for the sake of it, she said.

(58,785 posts)Presumably she got what she wanted all along, or close to, and off to the next deal for Pelosi.
There's lots of maneuvering right now. And historically lot of black congressmen haven't gotten the advancement they've earned. We don't know if that's the case for Fudge, but...squeaky wheels. She's probably already learning and planning for whatever new tasks she'll be taking on in 2019.
