Fudge's abrupt change appears to be tied to a story breaking in Cleveland on Tuesday.

Democratic Rep. Marcia Fudge sent a letter several years ago supporting a former state lawmaker and judge in Ohio who is now accused of killing his ex-wife, an incident that could play out in the contest over the next speaker of the House.
Fudge asked for leniency in sentencing for Lance Mason in a 2015 letter after Mason admitted to brutally beating his then-wife, Aisha Fraser. On Saturday, Mason was arrested in connection with Fraser's death.
The case could become a political problem for Fudge, who had been considering challenging Nancy Pelosi for speaker in the next Congress until announcing Tuesday afternoon that she would not. Regardless, Fudge is now tied to a criminal case that is dominating headlines back in Cleveland.
Mason previously served nine months in prison for beating up Fraser, a sixth-grade teacher, in front of their daughters. He's now been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with Frasers death, according to the Shaker Heights Police Department. Mason injured a police officer while trying to drive away from the scene of the incident, according to news reports.
Mason almost killed his ex wife in 2014 when he forcefully struck his wife more than 20 times in front of their children giving her substantial head injuries requiring surgery.
This is what Fudge wrote at the time:
The Lance T. Mason that I know is a kind, intelligent man and loyal friend, Fudge said. The Lance T. Mason that I know is an advocate for the people of his community. Whether as a Country Prosecutor, State Senator, or Common Pleas Judge. He is well respected and well liked.
Fudge added: Lance Mason is a good man who made a very bad mistake. I can only hope you can see in Lance what I and others see.
Mason's sister called the police stating that her brother had just stabbed his ex wife to death. Mason injured a police officer leaving the scene.
The one quality that stands out the most about Speaker to be Pelosi is that she is absolutely trustworthy, has excellent judgment and that there are no skeletons in her closet. Pelosi will get the job done and never create unnecessary controversy to undermine our agenda. Further she will ensure that the most capable person will be in place to carry on after she steps down.

(52,152 posts)so badly she needed reconstructive surgery. It isn't a massive leap to think he might kill her some day. It was a breathtaking lapse in judgement by Rep Fudge to have written that letter.

(814 posts)If need be. Let us not forget, as we hear things ramping up from Mueller, House Speaker becomes second in line for Pres.
That matters to me. That seems to be the adult thing to do, especially in a nation of little kids.. I can sure use someone in Leadership role that doesn't throw tantrums, but deals with the little two year old. Effectively. Didn't I hear Obama mention "mommy" issues today? How ironic. Pelosi gets it. Warren gets it. HRC gets it. What is the commonality?
Bullies abound.

That's why it is so important when you have someone as trustworthy as Pelosi that we support them.
I trust Pelosi.
