Not since the Watergate scandal have Democrats run up such a large margin of victory in midterm House races, NBC News data showed.
With votes continuing to be tallied more than two weeks after Election Day, Democrats hold a lead over Republicans in the House popular vote by more than 8.6 million votes.
That's the largest total victory in a midterm House election since Democrats defeated Republicans by more than 8.7 million votes in 1974, just months after President Richard Nixon resigned from office in disgrace.
And the number is continuing to inch up.
As of noon on Wednesday, Democratic House candidates won 58,990,609 votes while their Republican counterparts pulled in 50,304,975. That means that, so far, Democrats won 53.1 percent of all votes counted while Republicans earned 45.2 percent.

Or like those millions of popular votes that Clinton had over Trump which came from California.
Theoretically, had she won the state by just 1 vote she would have won all of its electoral votes while the millions extra were just piling on and of no use in an election decided by electoral votes. That's why I think this celebrating how Democrats won the popular vote total in House races which are individual congressional district races is a useless exercise which is somehow supposed to make us feel better.
Attempts to spin the otherwise substantial victory into being larger than it was do nothing but highlight how it wasnt what we hoped for.
Like your point, the simple question would you prefer if we won three million additional votes but only picked up 20seats?? makes clear how silly the artificial (and irrelevant) standard is.
Theres a reason that most Democrats describe the election as disappointing while most Republicans would say they were relieved.

If there were FAIR elections in those states, Democrats would have added at LEAST 15, likely 25 more seats in the House.

Just wait until 2020 when the Democratic Party wipes the stain of Trumpism from the world stage to the tune of tens of millions of votes over the damn GOP!!!

(22,566 posts)which came from California to Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, things would be different now. But as we all know, presidents are not elected by national popular vote. And neither are House candidates who are elected by popular vote in each congressional district.
I wonder if a losing World Series team could claim they were actually the winner because they scored the most runs in the games played rather than be the one to win 4 games.
But that's now how it works either.

(1,678 posts)but in a time when our democracy is under full Fascist assault, the bad news is that only about 50% of registered voters actually voted

(26,280 posts)such as all the gerrymandering as well as other tactics they used to quash the voters ability to kick them out of office like what happened here in Georgia.
