I went shopping on "Black Friday" a couple decades ago.
Never again.

(32,075 posts)And, I would wait until Monday for that if I didn't need eggs, which are on sale, and my coupon is expiring. You couldn't pay me enough to get me into any other sort of store today. I generally hate shopping, and any I will do will likely be online.

(17,981 posts)I had to pick up a Prescription so walked through Krogers. Not too busy , but was kind of surprised to see a couple of women filling their carts with appliances. Knowing full well those bargains will be cheaper before Christmas. It was the usual sale.
My kids suggested money so they coulld go shopping after Christmas sales. that is good if you wait until January as the week after has few sales except Christmas stuff.

(1,584 posts)Shocked the hell out of me because this store is usually very busy over any holiday. I walked right up to one of several, non busy cashiers. I was in and out in less than 6 minutes. There were very few cars on the road and the COSTCO parking lot across the street was only half full (usually can't find parking space except underground).
What is going on?

to each his own, but the last time I did so was >five years ago in Denver at 5:00 AM Best Buy to get a printer. I still have that laser printer and the ONLY reason I did so then was my printer had literally just died on Thanksgiving Day.
Once was enough.

(15,374 posts)This is literally the only television I've ever bought in my 46-years on Earth (still have it). For years, I had a really small screen television my mom gave me in high school, and then a friend gave me a large, heavy old-fashioned boxy TV that I gave back to her (she still has it). What I bought was relatively large screen and a good brand of TV that was just over $300 without deals. Got it for under $200. Fortunately, I was in a relatively small town that was just big enough to have a Walmart so even though it was packed, it wasn't sardines tight. They let us in, and you could choose a line to get in for whatever big ticket item you were going for, and they went through the line giving everyone a ticket for that item. When they ran out of tickets, tough luck, and people accepted it and either went to try another line or bought some smaller stuff. They wouldn't sell the big stuff to us before a certain time so we were still waiting an hour before they would take the shrink wrap off the pallets that were in the various aisles. I had a deck of cards on me as I'm a magician so I entertained my line a little bit, and then some of us sat down on the floor and played cards.
It was pretty laid back compared to what I've seen on television.

Since I tagged along with enthusiasts chasing mostly big items, I came home with only an $8 blouse 50% off its clearance price (the line obligingly stretched past women's clothing), a used book for our grandson because I had us swing by a great bookstore at 11 p.m., what may be terminal aversion therapy for Penney's -- incredible crowds (why?) with lines that literally stretched around the store, and genuine gratitude for on-line shopping.

Had trouble due to the line of media vehicles there to cover the spending madness.
I do not like shopping except when I get to watch my wife shop (mainly groceries). She tries so hard to please her family - get a good deal and the favorite brand, etc. It's special to watch because you are watching her care for her family.
Otherwise, I don't understand the rest of it. How people can line up in the cold for hours to get some latest fashion thing ... it won't compute.

It has an integrated net to keep bugs out, double layers (one of the options) on the bottom side for an insulating pad (though an underquilt is needed in colder temps), and a stash pocket off to the side for things you may need to reach. There a a variety of tarps to choose from. I bought the Mountainfly. Here's a link to the Warbonnet site. 25% off ends today, I think.

(9,533 posts)Sometimes I'll stop at one of the local wineries that now offer "purple Friday" deals and bring home a couple of bottles of wine. This year a mulled wine kit is on my list for my holiday party. I'll visit a mountain town and shop at their unique gift shops offering things like locally made jams and jellies, hand-knitted scarves, wood carvings, pottery, art, hand-crafted jewelry, a gems and mineral shop, local herb farm, camel dairy that makes soaps and lotions in aromas like myrhh and frankincense, a alpaca farm with soft, warm woolen goods, for my holiday shopping. I may stop in for lunch at a mom and pop restaurant and bring home a Julian apple pie for the family, too.
Shopping only online is forcing many businesses under, so while that may be fine if you're lookiing for a TV or other big box store type item since those stores also have an online presence, please remember to help the local stores, farms, artists and artisans that add to the character of communities.

(36,259 posts)It's in the low 40's today so I may hang up the icicle Christmas lights around the roof of the front veranda. Did the dishes, doing laundry, picked up the toys the grandchildren were playing with, bagged the garbage, fed the wild turkeys, fed the worms in the worm farm, topped of the two 5 gallon buckets of sauerkraut I made a few days ago with salt water,

We do Kickstarters and Etsy - or the occasional gift card = for Xmas and birthday gifts, anyway. For the "winter clothes" and grandkid's seasonal clothes requirements, we go to consignment and thrift stores, so we're already getting the bargains.

I went shopping on black Friday once. I remember when it was called the day after Thanksgiving.

I don't even have Thanksgiving with my sister any more because she and her family are out shopping by 6pm on Thanksgiving evening!! It's ridiculous.

(14,165 posts)....past Black Friday all the way to Christmas, and to the new year.
Sure you may not get the door crasher 50% off deal, but you might get a 40% off deal somewhere else if you look around in the following weeks. Most retailers will be having sales to drive customers into their shops all way up to Christmas. And then they have sales to get rid of old and excessive stock before the new year.
Its a big scam.

(26,582 posts)I needed shampoo, conditioner and cat food. Store was a little busier than when I go after work normally, but I was in and out quickly.
Ulta has Not Your Mothers on BOGO and there's some of their shampoos I've been wanting to try. I ordered two shampoos and a Big Sexy Hair root volumnizer (also big discount) online. I also ordered a video game off Amazon last night that was a good deal.
Last night I also hit three stores looking for something specific, but I got to the stores an hour or two after they opened so they were sold out. The stores were busy but not crazy mobs.

(15,374 posts)One of my nieces went out earl for Black Friday because her mom and dad wanted her to go get a flat screen television that they would pay her for. They were going to give it to her brother as an Xmas gift. Brother-in-law asked me later that day to go with him to help get it in the car. As it wasn't a huge TV, I went along with him just for funsies and to see his reaction when we picked up a 20 pound package together. He almost fell over putting too much effort into it.

Black Friday...Boxer Day, or whatever the hell its called are dead and gone to this old boy. I give my wife flowers and cash, and I honestly dont want anything! Bought a pair of $175 New Balance shoes for myself and my wife. I guess thats my Christmas splurge.
This is all one seriously stupid event. Im down in central Mexico now, and the thing I love the most is NONE of that superficial crap to deal with. Decorate if you want...go to church, if thats your thing...but you dont see people fighting over X-boxes, or some silly made in China shit. Its heaven...especially for us Bah Humbuggers.
