A week after the Army secretary signed off on a new service uniform, final details are still being worked out as the service prepares to solicit a contract and begin fielding the throwback uniform next year.
The first groups to wear the uniform will be forward-facing soldiers like recruiters, Thomas said. And for next year, his team is working on getting 500 sets made for a June event, around the time of the D-Day anniversary and the Army birthday.

The foldable garrison cap ― a version of which is worn by the Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force ― will be the standard issue cover for the uniform. A circular service cap will be optional and worn according to commander guidance. The beret will also be authorized per individual commanders.
A long, trench-style green coat will be the standard issued outerwear.
There are three optional jackets: A tanker in the newly coined heritage green color, which is identical to the black jacket worn with Army Service Uniform class Bs: the wool Ike jacket," a cropped green design; and a brown leather bomber jacket, with gathered knit cuffs and waistband, though with no shearling trim.
A pair of brown boots for airborne units to blouse their pants into are not a reality yet, but the intent is to show a design to Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley soon, Dailey said.

(5,914 posts)But I think people in general looked cooler in the 1940s. I look at old pictures from that time, and people all seem to be relatively fit, clean-cut, and put together. Much more so than now.

But, I do like those Army uniforms.

(5,914 posts)People weren't as health conscious, and exercise was nowhere near a science.
But damn, did those people look good, anyway.

(31,261 posts)The way mobsters used to dress during those days is an example. Most people back then dressed up to go to work, shopping, out to eat, ect. So they were dressed up more frequently that today's much more casual look. But I still think that fit people today look better and more stylish dressed up.

(1,896 posts)The reason they got away from the WWII uniforms in the first place is that so many of them were showing up in surplus stores that anybody could dress up like a soldier, and people masquerading as soldiers was becoming a problem. So: New uniforms, problem solved.
That may or may not be the problem now, and obviously you're never going to eliminate it, but as long as they have to buy new uniforms every so often anyway, they may as well re-design it occasionally and try to present a uniform a soldier can take pride in wearing due to a decent appearance.

(16,163 posts)maybe they should go all Toga and helmets like the Roman soldiers.
Will they be made in Ivankas' sweatshops?

(88 posts)First of all, this is not a Trump uniform, it has been in the planning stages since Obama.
And yes, we need to get the Army out these Air Force knock-off uniforms/band uniforms. And hopefully the blouse will not require all of the crap the current one does.

(16,163 posts)victorious in fighting our enemies (seems like a lot of them lately), we could stuff the uniforms with straw and place them on fields and mountains, toss em out of helicopters, put em in tanks.
We'd save a bundle on pay and benefits.
I still like my idea of helmets and togas, or maybe tams and kilts.

In all seriousness though I didn't think anything was wrong with the Army's last uniforms and I thought the current ones were ill-conceived. These look much better.

(13,539 posts)and other high ranking officers that we can't possibly really need. During WWII, we had something like one general for every 6000 active troops. Now it's one for every 1400.
The army also ran it's own mess halls and supply convoys during WWII just fine. The private contractors handling the food and driving the trucks are really just looting us.
Perfect response. Let's take the profiteering out of defense contracting.

(13,539 posts)for more important missions. The half-wits don't realize how it really works.
Blackwater or whatever they call it now and the others do not give us a good deal. They lure away our military guys with big bucks. If they are overseas, the pay for their housing and meals and all that, just like we do our active service guys. Then they tack on enough to turn a nice profit. Then we have to pay to train new guys to replace the ones they hired away from us.
I know the marines could still be doing a fine job guarding our embassies.
No need to privatize all this shit. Only benefits the war profiteers.
Did not know about the general/troops ratio. Why do we have so many Generals?

(26,047 posts)These uniforms have been planned way before Trump, and unlike many on this board, I have active-duty friends and relatives in the Ar,y, both officers and NCOs, across many MOSCs, men and women, and they LOVE these. The ones who are in specialty units are expected to continue to wear their berets (Airborne, etc.).
They are sharp, and no longer look like Air Force castoffs.

(66,294 posts)When I was in, we had the old pickle-green 'business suit' Class A uniform that had been around in one form or another since the 1950's. I hated it.
The old 'pinks and greens' uniform is stylish and looks much more military than the green uniform. There was a deliberate move in the 1960's to equate being a military officer to being a company executive, and that training for the one was suitable experience for the other. That when an officer left the service, he could have an important job waiting for him in corporate America. And it seemed to be reflected in the look of the officer's uniform back then.
I think the throwback uniforms are wonderful. Very classy.

(10,749 posts)Quick Google search shows that in 2012 it was revealed that uniforms were made in China. Whoops.
In that same quick search, I found that American Apparel has made US military uniforms since 1987. Website notes that uniforms are made in three facilities in Alabama. The website doesn't say whether they operate any other facilities.
Also, I'm not sure that this is the same American Apparel that was sold last year to (I think) a Canadian company.
So, as always with this regime and with government contracts generally - follow the money.

Ten years sounds like a long time to phase out the old uniforms. Is this standard? Sounds like all of those in BT will be issued the new ones but those already serving will have until 2028 to upgrade. Of course they can get the new ones sooner.
I imagine a lot goes into getting the uniform ready for those in BT but measuring them right off the bat sounds like a bad idea. Maybe its a necessity for logistical reasons. $400+ dollars per adds up pretty quick. I dont know the stats but I imagine a good number of people phase out. Second, BT drastically changes the body of many and they will have to be tailored a second time before even being worn once. That is from the article. I would think there would be a more efficient way to do it. I get it if its simply a logistical impossibility.
