Sherrod Brown sets his sights on Trump in 2020

In a POLITICO interview, the Ohio Democrat highlights his connection with Trump voters, a possible preview of a 2020 campaign.

By ELANA SCHOR 11/23/2018 07:57 AM EST

Democrat Sherrod Brown just won reelection resoundingly in a Trump state running on Trump’s issues — taking a hard line on trade and helping blue-collar workers.

Now the Ohio senator is talking increasingly like he’s prepared to take on the president himself.

In an expansive interview that began in his Senate office, Brown sketched the outlines of a potential presidential campaign that connects with the working-class, particularly Rust Belt voters who’ve fled the Democratic Party for Trump — but with a less divisive message.

“I don’t play off American workers against Mexican workers," Brown told POLITICO, even as he touted his ability to draw support from “a lot of Trump voters.”

"I don’t inject race in it,” he added. “I don’t inject anti-foreigner sentiment in it.

1. He'd be a formidable candidate. Pick Klobuchar, Harris, or Beto as a running mate.

But that’s why we have primaries. Gotta let the voters decide our nominee first.

Brown is very popular in OH and will win the Rust Belt states. I love Brown as our Cabdidate, gives us the best chance to defeat the Orange Idiot.

He is so popular in Ohio he could only manage 53% of the vote, and that was against Jim Renacci of all people (51% against Mandel in 2012)

While Rethugs have no problem voting for someone with #metoo issues, democrats especially Millennials & Gen Z democrats do.

I live in Ohio, in his last two elections Ohio voted against the other guy (Josh Mandel in 2012 & Jim Renacci in 2018) not for him. Both were scandal filled

Josh Mandel who is Ohio treasurer was being investigated for embezzling while he was running in 2012. Plus he was pounded in local press because as treasurer he hired a bunch of unqualified friends from school and way over paid them(by 10x).

Jim Renacci has been under FBI investigation twice in 6 years for accepting illegal campaign donations, Plus a big issue for him in Ohio was Nursing Homes, while he owned 20 nursing homes he used his congress house seat to vote against training for nurses, programs to reduce neglect, against standards for the care of patients with dementia

I believe this is the only race that a Democrat won statewide in OH.
OH is now red state and if he can win a red state, that bodes well for general election.

9. Same here. We can win with others, such as Harris, without sacrificing a Senate seat.

The Senate favors the Republican Party too heavily for us to give up a seat in a Republican-controlled state.

Though I am still up in the air, he has good stage presence and is unashamedly progressive.

6. Aside from the loss of a Senate seat, his stance over trade deals

seems to be in the same ballpark as Trump and even Sanders. If there is one thing that should have been learnt over the last 2 years, it's that the simplistic opposition to trade deals is not in the US interest, and is much more nuanced.

13. I agree. Sanders and Brown both have too simplistic a view of trade deals.

Brown has even said he support Trump's tariffs. That's not smart.

I disagree with his trade policy but, well, Ohio. I imagine it would be pretty nuanced if elected.

And we will lose the senate seat.

But he would win. Hands down. Especially with Harris, Booker or Beto as a running mate.
