SEDALIA, Mo. Republican U.S. Senate nominee Todd Akin drew the attention of reporters at the 60th annual Governor's Ham Breakfast when he said the federal government shouldn't subsidize school lunches, a program that affects millions of children.
"Why not do it at the state level?" Akin, currently a congressman, said when asked about the issue at the event, held at the Missouri State Fair.
He said it's part of his broader, longstanding opposition to any federal involvement in local school issues. "The federal government should be out of the education business, Akin said.
His opponent, incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., responded by warning that cash-strapped school districts can't afford to take over subsidized lunches that currently serve more than 600,000 Missouri children.

(39,215 posts)reason safety net programs were transferred to the feds was because of the inequality in the states. For instance one state would pay much more for afdc that the other and it caused people from poorer states to move to richer states. Back in the 50s what we call blue states paid much more than red states.

(39,961 posts)that they implemented school lunches is that before there was such a thing as school lunch, a significant portion of the population was too malnourished to join the Armed Forces.
Some of these idiots want them taken away, so they use the "State Level" spiel hoping to get rid of them there, but very few of them actually realize why they were started in the first place. It was because there were kids that were literally starving to death and had health problems due to malnutrition. You can't make an Army up of people that have health problems due to poor nutrition. Besides that, starving people are a hell of a lot more dangerous than people that have food.

(39,961 posts)Important, but secondary. The reason for the school lunch programs was so that children could get enough nutrition to join the Armed Forces if they chose to do so, and wouldn't be crippled or debilitated by not having enough to eat. It's a simple fact that people starved to death during the Great Depression, and children were certainly at a disadvantage over the adults. Many of them simply couldn't join the Armed Forces because of malnutrition and the many debilitating conditions that are the result of not being fed.
