Alabama GOP warns Jeff Sessions he may not win party nomination for his old Senate seat

Alabama GOP warns Jeff Sessions he may not win party nomination for his old Senate seat

https://www.rawstory.com/2018/11/alabama-gop-warns-jeff-sessions-may-not-win-party-nomination-old-senate-seat-report/

After a tumultuous stint as President Donald Trump’s chief law enforcement officer, Sessions was expected to return to his home state and challenge his replacement, Democratic Senator Doug Jones, for one of Alabama’s U.S. Senate seats.

According to the report, GOP leaders in Alabama are worried about a messy and crowded primary and are questioning whether they want the 71-year-old Sessions to run.

While the GOP thinks they can get the seat back after the disastrous campaign of ex-Judge Roy Moore, they feel they have other candidates that can fill their needs.

According to Politico, “Republicans were split on whether the 71-year-old Sessions would take the plunge, and whether he would clear the GOP field if he did. The belief, at least among some Republicans in the state, that Sessions might not be a gimme for the seat shows just how tumultuous the past three years have been for the Alabama political icon: From coming out as Trump’s earliest and most prominent campaign supporters, to being tapped as the nation’s most powerful law enforcement official, and now, potentially, to a difficult campaign for his old seat.”

And I don't necessarily give him the highest marks in that category, he will be looking to get a few bones thrown Doug Jones's way in order to be able to present some concrete accomplishments the next time he is up for re-election. "Not having supported Trump" will not be enough to convince Alabama voters to turn away from a Republican who is NOT known for having trolled high schools for under-age girls to hit on.

Sessions might as well check out his retirement benefits. Trump campaigning for him after ditching him unceremoniously might strain credibility even for Alabama Republicans, and supporting another Republican over Sessions in a primary will mean that their president has no regard whatsoever for the same guy he handpicked for U.S.A.G. Sessions can't win.

Whereas Mississippi and Alabama are neighbors whose politics often run in tandem. I think Doug Jones raised more than a few eyebrows in Mississippi.

For that matter, Beto gave Cruz the scare of his life. Republicans used to think they get a free ride in Texas, and Beto just showed them that they don't get their Senate seats for free any more. And we DID send Pete Sessions the door (my district, so I get to crow a bit), though it was about ten years overdue to my way of thinking.

And Trump will likely be on the ticket so Alabama Republican turnout will be energized again. Jones got lucky Moore imploded, he'll likely lose by 10-20 points unless Republicans nominate a tainted candidate again which is possible of course.

And in the age of Trump, few seem willing to oppose them in the primaries for fear that Trump will come down, dump on them, and turn a temporary setback in their careers into a permanent one.

On the other hand, now that Jones is in the door as an incumbent, if he can show Alabama a few things he did for them in the Senate that a challenger can't challenge, the negative Trump effect might even be magnified by then. If the DSCC isn't looking out for Jones already, they have probably blown it already. My worry is that Trumpas does a "my work-is-done-here" in time for Ayatollah Pence to mount a credible (in their eyes) substitute campaign. That has maybe a maximum shelf life of 12 months. The God Squad knows that Trump doesn't really care about them, he only cares about to what extent they are useful. The God Squad knows, on the other hand, that Pence is one of them. They could actually end up taking that seriously, and if Pence is only play-acting, that won't bother them in the slightest. The crooks that pray together, grab the pay together.

...he may not be quite evil enough to secure the Republican nomination for a Senate seat in Alabama.

Alrighty then.
