But it was also the date of the most famous rock event in our history. Woodstock.

(7 posts)I was playing in the neighborhood, had gone out and told mom I would be back at dinner (when that was not so strange), and one of my friends came out and told us that Elvis had died. It seemed odd to me, but there was more than a few of my friends that were impacted by the event.
I was not a fan, but still, even so young (we were between 9-14) it struck me that some were so touched. I'll never forget where I was.

(111,051 posts)I grew up with Elvis from "That's Alright Mama" forward. He was a social revolutionary. People that were not alive at that time cannot know how much influence Elvis had on our entire society. Elvis preceded the Beatles and I don't know if the Beatles would have happened without Elvis? I don't know if Woodstock would have happened without Elvis? He was that big.

In 1977 I was 20 and spending the summer at college, working and taking classes. Took the train home with a friend for Dad's birthday and heard the news in the car on the way to dinner.
Was not especially an Elvis fan at the time but have become one in the years since his death.
