Babies and kids are getting teargassed. How do Christians square with that?Make no mistake: Trump is testing whether he can get away with things like firing tear gas at young children. He is hoping these images harden his supporters to even worse acts to come. And he is banking on racism to get his way. We must oppose and condemn this. NOW.

(6,543 posts)Hate does not bring about greatness. It does not bring about success. It does not improve the spirit. It does not elevate the standing of humans in the animal kingdom, in fact it does the opposite. It does not give the inhabitants of a hateful nation peace. HATE. IS. THE. ENEMY!!!

(7,142 posts)and for decades it has been portraying Democrats as baby killers. So I ask them, why are Republicans against contraceptives?
I ask them if they believe that making abortion illegal will magically cure the problem, most answer yes. Then I ask them to explain why do countries that have the strictest laws against abortion also have the highest % of abortions. They flat out don't believe that one.
I ask them why can't we do things without passing a law, like making adoptions easier, like making contraceptives available, like doing a better job at sex education?
Republican politicians don't want to solve a problem they want a political talking point. One thing that Trump has done is to show that Repugs are phony Christians.

Actual quote from Franklin Graham. Apparently you can break all ten of the commandments, do exactly the opposite of what Christ is said to have preached but as long as you "defend the faith" you're just peachy with the evangelical crowd.
Yuck.

(33,236 posts)It needs to be pointed out what these evangelicals are evangelising: evil; doing deliberate harm to others for personal gratification.

(1,336 posts)just as the Clintons, the Obamas, Obamacare etc. have been demonized by the GOP. Problem is, progressives and Democrats in general aren't very good at demonizing anybody or anything. Wonder why that is.........hey, I think I know -- they have kind hearts and love for their fellow humans.
Hermit-The-Prog
(33,236 posts)I said they are evangelising evil; I did not say they are demons. They're human beings promoting an agenda that is dangerous and harmful to others, and they are doing it for their own gain. They are willing to inflict harm to satisfy their greed for money and power.

(23,059 posts)My sister, who still is a believer, watched the Sunday TV show of First Baptist and was amazed when the pastor talked about their responsibility to repudiate any leader who lies constantly, who uses his bully pulpit to increase racial tensions and one who uses their office to enrich themselves. He said Jesus called for christians to help the needy, not hurt them.
OMG, he never mentioned drumpf by name, but he was obviously telling his thousands of followers not to tolerate drumpfs crimes and not to support him, that he is NOT a man of God.
Woohoo for emerging sanity from a very large Evangelical church, may it spread throughout the land.

(7,142 posts)I am Catholic and our pastor has been a real Christian and we are in the middle of Republicans in Pa.
I read the readings every so often in church and I was in the back talking with our deacon. I just brought up Trump, he shook his head and told me to listen to his sermon, this was the Sunday before the election. To make a long story short,He tied love of neighbor to how we decide who to vote for. I was a bit shocked because our deacon was a farmer who I just assumed was a gung ho Republican.
Our pastor, a monsignor, always makes it a point to pray for the poor, for refugees, for the homeless, for the hungry. I actually smile when he is giving one of those sermons.
That was the happy story, the sad story is that Republicans won my district 80-20. They need to pay better attention at Mass.

(23,059 posts)in 30 years. I think there's close to a million people living here, so large-ish. First Baptist is located in the center of downtown and has always been very dominant politically in this area. They were pro-drumpf in 2016, so it's very remarkable that the pastor has turned against the serial philanderer. Oh yeah, he mentioned that as well, when our leaders are immoral and have consistently not honored their wedding vows, this is not someone that deserves support.

(4,066 posts)For the most part, they don't read the Bible. They go to church on Sundays and listen to what the MAN at the pulpit tells them. They do not question that man or any other authority figure. That would be going against their God to do so.
They will continue to be sheep.

(32,556 posts)In proper idiomatic English he was saying, "Let the little children come to me, and I'll teach them."
I think the King James translation used "suffer" as a synonym for "allow" or "let." But the English language has evolved a lot since the King James version was written 400 years ago.

(16,296 posts)that people who believe the Bible is immutable and "God's" word are full of shit. From ancient Hebrew, through Greek/Latin/Early English to modern day , the Good Book (as they say) has been so changed and modified that I laff and laff when anyone quotes it.

(6,042 posts)The focus of many evangelical preachers is the negatives of the Old Testament--the punishments, the stoning, war, evil, unforgiveness
They avoid the the positive messages in the Old Testament just as they ignore most of the Love gosper of the New Testament.

(1,089 posts)in my family that, even though I do not go to church, I live a lot more like Actual Jesus than those hateful fuckers do. Most times, they'll turn beet-red, but that's mostly because they have absolutely no comeback whatsoever. A few of them have actually engaged me, and I've asked them to point out where in the Bible it talks about Jesus teaching people to hate women, minorities, foreigners, poor people, sick people, gay folks, etc.
Most of the time, they'll try to cherry-pick some arcane or totally out-of-context quote from the Old Testament. That prompts me to wag a finger and remind them that if they're CHRISTian, they follow the teachings of CHRIST. That = New Testament. That enrages them even more.
The problem is that with the emergence of Dump, they no longer care that people know that they're total fucking hypocrites. So is he, so it's all good.
Still, I've made it a point to fuck with them more than I used to. We all should, frankly. Remind them that they're bad people who believe bad things for bad reasons. Shame them.

(2,845 posts)Most evangelicals prioritize believing in the fairy story over following the behavioral prescriptions of jesus, so the fact that their leader is a sadistic pervert doesn't really matter as long as he says the right applause lines.
