By Neal E. Boudette
Nov. 26, 2018
General Motors said Monday that it planned to idle three car plants and two transmission plants in a bid to trim costs as the North American auto sector slows.
The plants include a factory in Lordstown, Ohio, that makes the Chevrolet Cruze compact; the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, where the Chevrolet Volt, Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac CT6 are produced; and its plant in Oshawa, Ontario, which makes the Chevrolet Impala. The two transmission plants are in Baltimore and in Warren, Mich.
All five plants will halt production next year. We are taking this action now while the company and the economy are strong to keep ahead of changing market conditions, Mary T. Barra, G.M.s chief executive, said in a conference call.
Some of the plants could resume production, depending on the outcome of contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers union next year.

(64,852 posts)While it may be true that there is some union busting element, laying off salaried people is not a sign of that.

(28,270 posts)The saddest part is many of those soon to unemployed autoworkers swallowed Trump's lies in the presidential election and voted for him.
President Obama saved the auto industry when the GOP wanted it to go under in Bush Jr's great recession.
That should have made Michigan and Ohio a dem stronghold forever but many blue collar folks drank the Fox 'news'/Trump horseshit like the Harley-Davidson workers that used to work in the now shuttered and deserted HD plant in Kansas City.
