... Interpol, the Lyon, France-based international police agency, issued a statement late Thursday saying Assange remains on the equivalent of its most-wanted list, the Ecuadorian decision notwithstanding ...
Under Ecuadors asylum offer, Assange is not permitted to make political statements or grant interviews of a political nature, restrictions that are standard for anyone granted asylum, said an Ecuadorean Foreign Ministry official, who was not authorized to be quoted by name ...
In a mark of its anger over the asylum ruling, the Swedish Foreign Ministry said it had summoned Ecuadors ambassador to complain about the decision. The countrys foreign minister, Carl Bildt, said in a message posted on Twitter that our firm legal and constitutional system guarantees the rights of each and every one. We firmly reject any accusations to the contrary ...
The issue already seems to have frayed diplomatic ties between the U.K. and Ecuador. Britains previous ambassador to Ecuador, Linda Cross, departed earlier this year and had been due to be replaced this month by Patrick Mullee. But his arrival has been delayed ...

INTERPOL Red Notice for Julian Assange remains in force
Confirmation that Mr Assanges Red Notice status remains in force follows Thursdays decision by authorities in Ecuador to grant asylum to Mr Assange, two months after he took refuge in its London embassy while fighting extradition from the UK to Sweden where authorities want to question him in connection with alleged sexual offences.
A Red Notice status is a request for any country to identify or locate an individual with a view to their provisional arrest and extradition in accordance with the countrys national laws.
Many of INTERPOL's member countries consider a Red Notice a valid request for provisional arrest, especially if they are linked to the requesting country via a bilateral extradition treaty. In cases where arrests are made based on a Red Notice, these are made by national police officials in INTERPOL member countries.

(57,936 posts)I thought it was international.
Why would any country other than the US be concerned about Assange?
And we shouldn't even be concerned about him from my point of view. He is a journalist, and we stand for freedom of the press. Why is there a double standard for freedom of the press depending on whether the journalist is someone printing prohibited information about the US or some country we don't like?
The First Amendment has become a joke. Just a joke.

(979 posts)and if we can acknowledge the simple minded triviality of foreign ministry proclamations on twitter
assange is not wanted by interpol on behalf of sweden or any other country
he is wanted by interpol itself through a European Arrest Warrant
