Schumer: Democrats' position is $1.6 billion for wall funding

What the FUCK?

Sen. Chuck Schumer tells reporters at his on-cam presser that Democrats’ position is $1.6 billion for wall funding - far less than the $5 billion Trump wants - but he won’t say if Democrats are shutting the door on anything more, saying he’s not going to negotiate in public.

These are areas where the residential neighborhoods actually abut the border and existing fencing isn't adequate.

The 1.6 billion also involves increased night vision capability and tunnel detection tools that are more relevant that building walls in rural areas.

Schumer's counter to Trump is in line with the original request by the administration ( specifically for border security) https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/DHS%20BIB%202019.pdf for "Border Security" which is 1.6 billion. LAst year 1.3 billion was appropriated I believe.

And the federal government is on a Continuing Resolution through to December 7.

Trump will threaten a government shutdown if Congress won’t give him all that he wants and he will use "caravan invasion" hysteria to ram in as much funding as he can and the Republicans will try to get as much as they can until Democrats control the house in January.

so I don't get the outrage against Schumer in particular in this case.

It's important to note that this is a tweet from not Chuck Schumer. It's noticeably short on details, as evidenced by the spectrum of responses here. It's hard to say exactly what Schumer said or meant, or if he has some additional cards up his sleeve.

In any case, the hammering out of the remainder of the budget by Dec. 8 when the latest continuing resolution expires is all on the Republicans. Republicans still control the House, the Senate, and the White House. If they can't put together a deal and the government shuts down, it's all on them. Democrats don't have any say or leverage in the matter, and any failures are completely on the Republicans.

The Senate needs 60 votes for the budget. For a budget to pass some Democratic votes are needed. It is the same as 2009-2011 when Democrats held the Senate and needed Republican votes for the budget.

It's not going to do squat, anyway. Let him waste a few taxpayer dollars on his stupid wall if it means getting a positive change in immigration policy in return.

If we don't get anything in return for that money, though, forget it.

Edited: All we get in exchange is no government shutdown? Nuts to that. If the government shuts down, it's on them, not us. Let them own it. Government shutdowns have a great history of working out well for Republicans.

GOP did not get more seats with a map like that. If you want a majority, you need moderates to run in red or purple states...that is a fact. And if you look at the senate realistically and study history, you will find we have never had a majority without a big tent that includes moderates. Without the Senate,we will get no judges.
