<President Donald Trump said he expects General Motors to keep an Ohio assembly complex open after its production of the Chevrolet Cruze ends early next year. Bryan Keeley said he wants to believe it, but hes heard talk like that before.
Keeley is one of the thousands of workers at GMs Lordstown factory near Youngstown who learned that the plant is being idled in March, with no new production promised. He said he voted for Trump two years ago because of the Republicans vow to help American workers.
I thought he was going to do miracles for us, so did a lot of other autoworkers, Keeley, 46, said outside Ross Eatery and Pub near the plant. Keeley has worked for GM for 26 years but has been laid off since June. He needs to step up to the plate and do what he said.
Tommy Wolikow, a Lordstown resident who said he was laid off from the plant on the day Trump was inaugurated last year, has been attending his rallies with the Good Jobs Nation coalition to bring attention to the plight of workers. He said the first political rally he attended was the one last year in Youngstown where Trump told voters not to sell their homes.
Wolikow, 36, who had bought a house two miles from the Lordstown plant, resisted seeking a transfer to another GM facility because he didnt want to uproot his family and still had hopes of returning to work.
Now, unable to find another job and maxing out his credit cards, hes put in for a transfer and isnt sure he can trust Trumps assurances the plant will remain open.
Its hard to keep on thinking that hes going to fight for us, Wolikow said.>

(82,849 posts)By the way Ohioans, Trump will be back in a year or two, spouting the same bullshit promises and trying to make you feel good about your fear by channeling it into hatred of your fellow Americans. Start preparing your response now, and don't say you weren't warned. Again. Like you were last time.

(11,686 posts)Guess what, non of those damn Hispanics took your job like you said they would and are. You simply voted your jobs away with hate.
Hope you have fun getting those other jobs trump and his family are creating, however, you need to move to China or Mexico...If you can afford to get there and they will allow you in. Oh, wait they will not let you in because that means you will take their jobs and you are to stupid, arrogant, and hateful to lower yourselves to take those jobs when they will pay so little.
Do not apply for help because that is being either lessened and taken away because you thought everybody else who got it are lazy.
Can you tell I have no sympathy for them?

(54,358 posts)Trump lied, and said he could, and these people believed him because they wanted to.
I get that the one worker didn't want to uproot his family. Who would? But was losing his job and being broke REALLY worth that red hat? He can't eat it, and it will not pay his credit card debt, and nor will the man whose empty slogan is printed ion it.

(16,176 posts)On MSNBC there was discussion of a 22% burden here and an 11% burden abroad. Said that it actually was driving a lot of these decisions.
Didnt get the details though, but it was a credible source.

(11,885 posts)With the contractors he's screwed over, the politicians he's blackmailed with information he has on them, and all the other companies he claimed he helped but in reality he didn't, and behind the farmers he's screwed over too . They can continue to believe his BS, but in the end they'll realize it was all a con for their votes, and he really could care less about them. His tariffs intentionally hurt them , and GM. Other auto companies will be following GM because of his trade tariffs.

(16,925 posts)feel bad for these people that GM is putting out of work. They are the victims of corporate greed and policies (tax breaks, tariffs, and regulations) that are aimed at the 1% - more of "Raygun's" Trickle-down religion.
As someone else here at DU puts at the end of each posting:
"Why do you vote as if you are the 1%?"

(24,396 posts)their health insurance. Not a problem when you have a decent-paying union job. They voted for tRump even though he is an overt racist and misogynist.
They didnt care who got hurt as long as they thought they would get ahead.
Fuck them.

(33,328 posts)They were proud of their values matching his -- me! me! me! -- and now they get the stinky end of that same stick. As their diety says, "Losers! Weak! Sad!"
I can't even muster a "thoughts and prayers" for them. They had no hesitation in voting for cruelty to others, now they want others to be sympathetic when they receive the cruelty they gleefully empowered.

(1,819 posts)I use to really care about the auto worker. But now when I see one come on tv and tell their sad story and find out that they supported Trump I just don't feel sympathetic.
I'm Hispanic and my daughter is gay and all I see is someone who possibly hates us, so why should I care about their pain?

(3,259 posts)It's amazing they are still questioning if he is going to fight for them or not. Trump has no respect or appreciation for workers. They are nothing more than cogs to be abused by the corporate class.
