the Hyde win in Mississippi! We all knew the racist would be given a senate seat by those who vote for their own demise.

(7,142 posts)did you listen to her? She was a terrible candidate. Electing her would be like putting Marsha Blackburn in the Senate, oh wait, never mind.

(45,468 posts)citizens of Mississippi, 46% of whom voted for the non-racist. In the past the election would have been 70-30, not 54-46. One day, Mississippi will throw out their past and join the rest of us in the 21st century.

(13,868 posts)Yes there is a story here. Trump carried the state by 18%, racist lady won by 7%.
Indicates the reaction of a lot of voters, even in Deep South Mississippi, against Trump and shows that uncoded racism loses votes.

(5,995 posts)With all the attention his rallies brought, it made Espy's ground game stronger and embarrassed traditional R's that weren't overt racists.
Without the flashing neon signs, many in the GOP could have held their nose and voted for someone that sounded like almost everyone they know.
When she double/triple downed to attract the underbelly of MS that voted for the 3rd candidate, she likely lost as many as she gained.

(52,155 posts)Mississippi basically has no real suburbs in comparison to most states. Jackson has a few and Desoto county is a suburb of Memphis but that's it. Espy did reasonably well in those places (he still lost them but improved upon both Clinton and Obama). He lost ground in the white rural areas relative to Obama. Now, look at other southern states. NC has suburbs of Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, and Winston Salem. Georgia suburbs of Atlanta. Tennessee suburbs of Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville. Alabama suburbs of Mobile, Birmingham. Yes, MS is a lost cause for awhile, though Espy for governor or Lt. Governor sounds like a plan to me. The Lt Governor is very powerful in MS. Rural areas are stagnant in terms of population, cities and suburbs aren't. If I were Senator Tillis, Senator Alexander, Senator Purdue and even Cassidy I would be a bit worried. Blacks are energized. Suburbs are starting to turn. Rural whites are maxed out. We have improved our standing in the South a lot. Even if we don't win such races making them spend finite resources there means less for places like Colorado and Maine or to attack in places like Minnesota. On edit forgot Texas which has suburbs of Austin. San Antonio, El Paso, Houston, Dallas, and Fort Worth.

(6,911 posts)I find the election, county-by-county analysis useful. He is one of the best at the science of "the ground game".
I understand why people slam him, but he is just doing his job.

(12,577 posts)I used to work as a reporter for the daily newspaper in Tupelo. Not everyone is as bad as Hyde-Smith, but racism was always just below the surface. For example, I was dating someone whose company I enjoyed and seemed to be reasonably forward thinking as far as race was concerned (i.e., supported civil rights, voting rights, integration, etc.). Then she said quite matter-of-factly, "Of course, I don't want to have them swimming in the public pool."
I was too flabbergasted to ask why. We stopped seeing each other a short time later.
