(26,259 posts)The narcissist I worked with did the same thing. She was clever and sly but not above average in intelligence. The confidence she used while spewing nonsense was a wonder to behold. And she was afflicted with 'malapropism'. Constantly using big, totally incorrect words in an effort to impress. And, she had a following who thought she was BRILLIANT
She once caught me rolling my eyes, during a meeting, and damn - her reaction was not pretty.

Unfortunately in this case half the voting public didn't see it or didn't give a darn because they figured they'd get what they want from him or be able to control him.

They often experience very similar "career arcs" over the course of their time in the organization. Loud-mouthed, blowhard, masters of self-promotion, they can seemingly wow enough of the "big brains" (i.e., upper-management people), working their way up the ladder, until they finally screw up so badly and end up crashing to earth in the most spectacular of ways.
Nearly every one of these people were perfect examples of the "kiss up/kick down" personality. In other words, constantly attempting to ingratiate themselves to the "top dogs", while treating those at their level or below like dirt underneath their shoes, or in some cases, actively working to trash them and sabotage their own efforts.
Right off the bat, I can think of 6 or 7 of these people by name.

(26,259 posts)And, again, she spoke with such confidence, far too many people, in the department, bought into what she said. And those that didn't found it easier to pretend than to challenge. The one time I did challenge her bought me about 5 years of grief because I became a target that she felt needed to be destroyed.
However, in Division meetings, as soon as she opened her mouth, heads all across the room either looked down or hid behind notebooks because they KNEW their faces would soon be covered with incredulous expressions. One single smirk or eye roll could spell disaster, later in the hallway.

(22,110 posts)go into 'roll your eyes' mode or 'ignore' mode. We have all had experiences w/ dealing w/ people like this, who monopolize the conversation thus sucking energy out of the room and stifling conversation around them. I can't stand them.

(26,259 posts)Like trump*, this person spoke with such 'authority', and confidence, people who lacked critical thinking skills were swept up into the bullshit. They'd listen to her words and how she said them, but not to what she was actually saying.
I actually moved up my retirement date by 3 years because there was no escaping this individual. Much like trump* (she's a big fan of his) she targeted people for vile abuse, and I was #1 in her cross hairs.

(22,110 posts)those you want to deal w/, not those you have to deal w/.
I'm surprised that she's gotten away w/ her vile remarks for so long, but in my experience, they usually get caught eventually, for they are usually all talk, and nothing of substance.
Take care and I wish you the best in your retirement if you're already retired!

(26,259 posts)After losing most of my family in a 6 month period, I decided life is just too short to put up with that kind of pounding stress.
I pretty much cut ties with everyone in my old department, because they enabled her behavior. Yea, it was easier to side with her than against her, but that doesn't excuse them.
My belief in Karma tells me that this individual will reap the consequences. I don't have to be there to watch (although that would be satisfying).
SWBTATTReg
(22,110 posts)Perhaps one day you'll hear about karma / and this person, but I wouldn't waste my time on her (I'm sure you're not).
Go enjoy yourself and congratulations to you. Remember those from before, and live like they wished you to live, in peace, love and harmony. Take care.

(15,536 posts)I caught on to this person's narcissism fairly quickly but I can honestly say that in all my years of working I'd never worked for anyone like her. I left there as soon as I could make my exit and eventually went on to get another full time job in my early 60's. I just knew that, as you said, life was too short to have to live with the stress this woman brought to the job.
With regard to karma, I found out she was eventually fired as she had been from her prior two jobs. She was still able to go on and get another good paying, high level job but that lasted about a year or two before she was eventually fired from that job also. As far as I know, she no longer works.
People with narcissistic personality disorder usually do find themselves at the upper levels of an organization because they are so good at promoting themselves and manipulation. But they are eventually found out.

(26,259 posts)She was originally fired for bringing a spare coat and purse to work, to leave in her cubicle so it looked like she was in the building. She was actually out either shopping or getting her hair and mani/pedi done. She is so arrogant that she'd actually disappear at about 9, come back after lunch with new hi-lights in her hair! Her boss was an idiot, and did violate the contract. So this individual brought some sort of ongoing litigation against the company and found a way to string it along for YEARS.
Since then she has been written up a record number of times, racially harassed people, told a Jewish co-worker that she'd better just face the fact that this is a 'christian nation', and that's just the tip of the iceberg. I think it was just more hassle than it was worth to spend the time to get rid of her.
When I turned in my letter of intent to retire, HR asked me what they could do to make me change my mind. I said they can fire this individual, and the color drained from their faces. So, after 29 years, I used up 2 months of vacation time, showed up on my birthday (first day eligible for retirement) cleared out the rest of my stuff, did an exit interview and left.
I've cut ties with pretty much everyone who kept their jobs, after the take over, so I really have no clue as to her current status. I guess I could check on Linked In.

I consider myself reasonably bright, and I just love learning new things. Since I read a lot of non-fiction, I really do tend to learn something new every day. Plus in casual conversations with people. Or what I read in the news. There is so much to learn and know that it just never ends.

It reminds me of the silly stress families impose on themselves during the Holiday season.. Who craves the turkey at the dining room table? No one in the real world. It's only on the TV, in the movies and advertising.

(7,142 posts)When I used to stop for just 1 after work there was that 1 guy who no one wanted to sit beside because he always had the lowest temperature, the most rain, caught the biggest fish, shot the biggest buck. He was such a liar that everyone gave up arguing with him, it was pointless, he never admitted he was wrong.
At least that guy at the bar had an excuse, he was usually drunk, from other people setting up the bar.
