demonstrating his authoritarian instincts
He should have never picked a special counsel, Trump told the Post when asked why Rosenstein should be behind bars.
This was, of course, a preposterous explanation. Theres nothing illegal about appointing a special counsel Rosenstein has the authority under the law. Theres certainly nothing treasonous about it. Importantly, when Mueller was first appointed, even many Republicans and allies of the president praised the pick, viewing the former FBI director as a reliable and upstanding public servant. These allies of the president only started criticizing Mueller when it became clear that Trump was at serious risk of being caught in a crime.
But aside from the specifics of the tweet, everyone should object to the fact that the president has become completely comfortable with demanding that people he disagrees with politically should be locked in prison under the thinnest of pretenses. Its a disturbing and dangerous habit that he has acclimated his followers to and encouraged them to embrace. Even once Trump is gone, they may demand it of future GOP leaders, and the country could slouch toward authoritarianism.

Has democracy ever been at bigger risk that at this moment in time?

(11,885 posts)And by his saying that he shows no respect for the law. He wants to be the judge, jury, and executioner now for everyone. trump almost always accuses others of what he's done, or is doing.

(1,414 posts)we are there and many, if not most of us are in complete denial. We were slouching when people supported trump's run. The GOP became the party of authoritarianism when they nominated trump and he told them clearly that he was/is an authoritarian with his "Only I" speech at the RNC. Our democracy died when the man was inaugurated.

Robert Mueller is superb choice to be special counsel. His reputation is impeccable for honesty and integrity. Media should now calm down

(15,237 posts)Who really thinks he will tolerate a co-equal branch of Government, the House of Representatives or even the Judiciary (which should be friendly). The unthinkable is still around the corner. Will the House of Representative be allowed to organize in a new Congress? If so will Trump just ignore that branch of Government? Since elections are not going his way will Trump dispense with having elections? Will Trump submit to a Judiciary that thinks they are a co-equal branch? Real authoritarians require a purge of opposition how long do we have? We are still in the age of Promises made Promises delivered. I take Trump as a clown seriously; his jokes are not funny.

(15,642 posts)Frankly, it's disgusting and alarming that the M$M has not 24/7 bugled this point exactly.
The M$M has been beyond complicit in the danger we now face in the nation and the world.
