IOWA CITY About 500 people packed into the basement cafeteria at Iowa City High at a Democratic caucus, cheering video messages from President Barack Obama and clapping at the notion of building momentum for Obamas 2012 re-election campaign.
The crowd was standing-room only and more cafeteria tables had to be wheeled into the warm room for people who were sitting on the floor.
Local Democratic party leaders said it was a sign of the commitment of voters to get Obama returned to the White House. If Democrats want more to be accomplished, its important to be very engaged in the 2012 campaign, party leaders said.
I think that anyone who thought there wouldnt be a turnout for Barack Obama was sorely mistaken, Iowa Rep. Dave Loebsack, a Democrat from Iowa City, said in welcoming the crowd.
Iowa City resident Sara Steussy, 28, attended her third caucus Tuesday night. Even though the Democratic candidate choice of Obama is a given, Steussy said, she felt it was her duty to attend.
I feel like as an Iowan its an important thing, she said. Making sure people are on board, still supportive.

Iowa City resident Anne Duggan, a medical writer at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, said it didnt bother her that some in the Democratic crowd supported uncommitted delegates at the caucus. Letting people with differing views speak is an important part of the process, Duggan said.
For her part, Duggan said Obamas campaign did a good job organizing supporters three years ago and has already started mobilizing voters for 2012.
I think Obamas organization really knows how to get people going, she said.

CEDAR RAPIDS We rock.
Were here tonight to organize, energize and kick some Republican butt, Libby Slappey, Precinct 41 chairperson for the Iowa Democratic Party, told a cheering crowd packing the Democratic caucus in the Cedar Rapids Washington High School.
The Republicans think theyve got it going on, but we are ready to rumble.
The air was electric as people gathered to whip up support for their incumbent candidate, President Barack Obama, and organize the masses to work for his re-election efforts.

(24,411 posts)Many of the professors and other University of Iowa employees and students live there. In effect, the demographics
and ultra-liberal ideals of the two cities (Iowa City and Coralvile) are pretty much identical. Both Iowa City and
Coralville are in Johnson County.
I lived in Iowa City for a time, when I attended the University of Iowa.
Iowa City and Coralville are probably the most Progressive cities in the entire state. I loved being there for that reason. I arrived
in Iowa City after being raised by very conservative, bigoted parents.
I left Iowa City a very enlightened, Progressive person.
Love Iowa City!

(37,573 posts)and probably a higher percentage of Democrats than my county in Kansas. My county has 73,000 people, many of them either military or prisoners or ex-prisoners (not to mention Republicans outnumbering us by 3-2). We had 600 people at our caucus in 2008.
Plus, they consolidated caucus locations and some Democrats went to the Republican caucus and voted for Paul. http://www.salon.com/2012/01/02/occupys_iowa_options_ron_paul_or_uncommitted/
