(24,287 posts)I met him at Biddeford Pool, ME in 2006 when they shut down the harbor for Bush. I asked him, what was the point of invading Iraq. He said "nice to me you". Fuck Him. BTW, pretty sure he had a girlfriend, lets see if there is any mention of that.

(15,265 posts)"The Invasion of Kuwait on 2 August 1990 was a two-day operation conducted bIraq against the neighboring state of Kuwait, which resulted in the seven-month-long Iraqi occupation of the country. This invasion and Iraq's subsequent refusal to withdraw from Kuwait by a deadline mandated by the United Nations[8] led to military intervention by a United Nations-authorized coalition of forces led by the United States. These events came to be known as the first Gulf War and resulted in the expulsion of Iraqi forces from Kuwait and the Iraqis setting 600 Kuwaiti oil wells on fire during their retreat"
That United Nations authorized coaltion was comprised of 33 countries.

(15,265 posts)He refused. It was actually a 35 country U.N. authorized coalition. Gulf War I was considerably different then the second Gulf War. Civilian loss of life and civilian property damage was minimal. The targets were military.
On the other hand Dubya, Cheney and Rumsfeld's bogus adventure was a catastrophic cluster f.ck

(488 posts)Died this afternoon. He was supposed to die around the same time as my dad. That old SOB didn't kick it until 4.5 years later. He'll get a kick out of this too. But Burt was a damn good family man. Going to miss him too.

(5,126 posts)I received a Presidential award for athletics and scholarship. I believe (my memory isn't quite clear) that I was the only female in my class to receive that specific award which came with a certificate that had his signature (auto pen or stamp). I do remember feeling very honored by it. Upon reflection, it is little bit sad, that I know that is the last time I would have ever felt honored by an award from one of our Republican Presidents. Even though I wasn't old enough to vote, I did support Dukakis in the '88 election, but life went on and HW was President and I was honored by the acknowledgement from his office. I couldn't say I would have felt the same about W or trump.
Peace and Vibes to his family.

(959 posts)I am sad, not with his passing, but being reminded of my grandmother who died 3 years ago, and my other grandmother who died one and a half years ago. They were both WW2 generation and the last survivors of that period in the family's history.
I feel for their family, but I remember my family's loss.
Miss ya Ruth, Elsbeth, Bob, Henry, Robert, Roland and all the siblings I never met because I was born after you died.

(37,364 posts)I appreciate that HW respected the limits of the power of the presidency, something his son's VP didn't. He respected our institutions. ADA was a gift to people with disabilities. He didn't have to sign tHarkin's bill, but he helped to change the quality of life for millions. I disagreed with his politics and his patrician view, did not vote for him, but my view of his passing is tempered by the realization of what that generation fought to defend. We have only to look at what we have now to understand how easily our democracy can be lost. His service is done and the good he did should be honored as much as the ill condemned.
